Voodoo in New Orleans, a melange of religion, entrepreneurship, and business networks, stretched across the color line in intriguing ways. Roberts's analysis demonstrates that what united professional practitioners, or "workers," with those who sought their services was not a racially uniform folk culture, but rather the power and influence that Voodoo promised. Recognizing that social immobility proved a common barrier for their patrons, workers claimed that their rituals could overcome racial and gendered disadvantages and create new opportunities for their clients.

Voodoo rituals and institutions also drew inspiration from the surrounding milieu, including the privations of the Great Depression, the city's complex racial history, and the free-market economy. Money, employment, and business became central concerns for the religion's practitioners: to validate their work, some began operating from recently organized "Spiritual Churches," entities that were tax exempt and thus legitimate in the eyes of the state of Louisiana. Practitioners even leveraged local figures like the mythohistoric Marie Laveau for spiritual purposes and entrepreneurial gain. All the while, they contributed to the cultural legacy that fueled New Orleans's tourist industry and drew visitors and their money to the Crescent City.

This book explains the dynamics of religion and power in NOLA. I did not understand how or why Blacks would choose to teach Whites about the very system that would protect them against harm from Whites. Now I understand that the society in NOLA was unique between Creoles and White in NOLA. I do not believe a relationship of this kind existed between the races anywhere else in the United States at this time in history. Prof. Roberts has done a great job in systematically explaining the times as they were. A great book for any student of history!

If u didn't get to the exhibition, this book will serve nicely. Most prints are large and crisp. Text is smart and tight enough. One gripe: I esp like whole and detail shots to get the "at the museum" feel. Detail shots would have been nice. Also, while I appreciate the desire to be "true" to the art, if a dark painting is going to be reduced to 1/6 or 1/8 page it is worth lightening it up a bit (small Corot and Manet shots are not good; and a Degas at 1/4 page is frustratingly inaccessible, bad choice for a sig reduction). NTL, there is plenty here that is done well and I'm savoring the book.

I enjoyed it thank you. It is very accurate anybody who translated they're Born day's, saw the accuracy, and were blown away. Glad I now have it for my collections. Drop the 12:60 ttyme frame, where tyme is money. Pick up the 13:20 where tyme is not only in tune with all creations, but tyme is art.

Kevin Grant is a Senior Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University. His wide range of specialist expertise includes: Systems; Information and Information Systems; Strategic Information Systems Planning; E-Business Applications and Technologies; IT/IS Evaluation and Research, Teaching, Scholarship and Consultancy in Higher Education.

Ray Hackney is Chair in Business Systems and Director of the Doctoral Programme within Brunel University Business School. His research interests are the Strategic Management of Information Systems within a variety of organisational contexts, with an increasing speciality in government sectors.

About the Author
John C. Pine, Ph. D., is an Associate Research Professor as well as a member of the Graduate Faculty and Adjunct Professor at Louisiana State University's Department of Management. He received his B.A. from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN in 1968, followed by his Masters and his Ph. D. from the University of Georgia. Research interests include vulnerability and consequence assessment to natural and man-made hazards; liability issues and emergencies; and crisis management.

Badly Written and Badly Edited

There are other books out there on emergency management. They cannot possibly all be as poorly written as this one. The writer is not particularly articulate, but that's the least of this books problems. Much of the technology is dated. The book, copyright 2007, keeps bringing up the issue that internet access may be compromised by "busy signals." When referring to GPS, he states that it has 30 meter resolution (that improved under President Clinton!).

The reader is advised to purchase "the fastest computer possible" to run GIS applications. It was a bit slow, but I could run ESRI's ARCmap OK on my 2.8 GHz P4. My laptop runs an Intel Core i3 and handles GIS applications just fine. I don't need to plop down several grand to purchase a super-fast Xeon based machine.

On page 63 he states "Geocoding is the graphic representation, usually in the form of a point on a map [of address data]." Never mind that there's not a comma after "map," the fourth word "graphic" should actually be "geographic." This error makes a tremendous difference in the meaning of the sentence and in how somebody unfamiliar with GIS would understand the chapter. This is not an isolated error, just one I recently ran across.

The book has plenty of logical errors, too. He's discussing GIS and says (p. 70) "Staff do not fully understand the technology prior to extensive training." Really? If they did, they wouldn't need the training! Again, this is just one example of a problem that crops up over and over.

To add insult to injury, on p. 114, where he's discussing using satellites for remote sensing and imaging, he posts a picture of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) carried on board satellites to produce these images--at least that's what the picture caption says. The picture there is one of a child's toy radiometer, such as Amazon carries: Radiometer.

This book feels pieced together by somebody who wanted a book contract but didn't know much about the subject he was covering. I haven't finished the book yet, but the first third of it has been so bad that I cannot imagine ever recommending this title to anybody.

If you are a professor thinking of using this for a class--please don't! You will really annoy your students if you require them to plop down $56 on this paperweight!

Seeking a text on emergency management, to serve as a reference. This book is not it, as it is poorly written. If the example page(s) are still open please take the the time to review it yourself, BEFORE purchasing this lemon.

If you are an instructor, or emergency manager, please re-consider before you purchase this text and suffer through it. Banging your head on the desk after purchase will not help you. There are many texts on the subject which are much better than this one.

To put it mildly, this text as one use . . . kindling.
