Recent experimental research on failure criteria, frictional sliding laws, and flow laws is summarized in tables, and palaeopiezometry is discussed.

`The techniques of modern structural geology are highly influenced by analoque and numerical modeling of deformation. Due to the increasing power of computers, these modeling results highly influenced our understanding of deformation mechanisms, rheology of rocks and structures resulting from deformation of rocks. Whereas many articles have been published about the various techniques of modeling, few illustrative books deal with the most important question especially for field geologists: How can we apply this better understanding of deformation related processes when we look at natural rocks especially thin sections. A first advance to fill the gap has been taken by Passchier and Trouw (1996) in their excellent book about "microtectonics." At the first glance the book of Blenkinsop (2000) seems to be a very similar approach. However, this is not the case: Whereas "Microtectonics" focuses on microstructures and shear sense criteria mainly created by ductile deformation, "Deformation Microstructures and Mechanisms in Mineral and Rocks"concentrates cataclastic deformation, diffusive mass transfer, magmatic and submagmatic deformation as well as shock induced microstructures. The book of Blenkinsop is very clearly structured and has many illustrative figures as well as an colour plate appendix with 48 beautiful examples of microstructures in thin sections. In order to use this book for teaching it would be a great idea to include in a following edition a CD with the digital files of all these illustrative pictures.
As a lecturer of an advanced structural geology course I initially through to use one of the two books as textbook. After reading both books in detail I have now the problem that I find both very useful because they focus on different topics of the formation and interpretation of microstructures. I will strongly recommend advanced students studying structural geology to buy the book of Blenkisop.'

The final chapter , "From microstructures to mountains: deformation microstructures, mechanisms and tectonics", is perhaps somewhat anomalous in that it is significantly more quantitative and integrative and introduces the reader to how observations on the microscopic scale can be used to understand much larger-scale processes. As the latter is still freqquently unappreciated by many geologists, this chapter provides a useful and valuable conclusion to the book and shouldprepare the reader for the prospect of further study using more sophistictaed techniques and methods.'

great first book

I am the proud owner of eight Lisp books, and this one is at the top of the list for learning the language, because of the exercises, and because Wilensky is a teacher and knows how to teach. You don't learn a language by reading a book, or by reading a specification, but by writing code. The chapters in 'Common Lisp Craft' are short enough to read through in one sitting, but the end of chapter exercises will keep you busy for days. The last two chapters involve real applications, and go much farther than simple beginner exercises.

Three warnings:
1. My copy is 23 years old (1986 to 2009) and environments have changed, the interface with Lisp in Wilensky is totally out of date and pretty much useless.
2. This book alone isn't enough, particularly with respect to macros, quotes, CLOS, and the like, so expect to follow it up with something else from another point of view, like Peter Seibel.
3. These is a solutions manual. Get it. You will need it.

This book is a classic in the Lisp literature. It is extremely readable. Those new to Lisp can gain from this. Good Lisp programming style is emphasized. this book is a reworking of the author's earlier book LispCraft. Ease of reading should be considered this work's greatest asset.

I have read the book. It was easy reading, took notes and felt I had a reminder course on my spiritual journey while in this earth existence. I have now shared the book to a family member who also needed a bible while reading the book. We either reminders or awakening. a book that does what the title says

i write this recommendation to emphasise to potential readers that this is a very worthy study of the extinction of the Thylacine. whilst true that this book will not inspire hope that this most unique of creatures survives, it does unravel the reasoning behind it's rapid fall into extinction. Paddle offers a gentle introduction to the species' biology and ecology, aswell as a history in captivity, but it is his research of bounty records and contemperary accounts that sets this work above others. scientific maybe, but well planned, researched and written, and the twist he brings in regarding the reason for the bounty is worthy of an agatha christie novel! an excellent piece of work and well suited to conservation biologists, natural historians and anyone with an interest in the twentieth century's greatest loss.

Hopefully Not The Last.

A very well written and comprehensively documented book. The author has gone to a lot of trouble to back his views as any dedicated historian should. Paddle has uncovered many myths about the thylacine and has revealed the fact the humans would have benefited by the loyalty and companionship of this creature. The thylacine has many things in common with the domesticated dog (though of course it is a marsupial. )
This does not mean I agree with everything Paddle says but he does uncover attitudes all too common in the study of any historical subject. That is the tendency to generalise from one example. For example because one thylacine wouldn't eat wombat in one particular place the idea got around that 'thylacines wouldn't eat wombat.' A small point, I know, but this tendency to generalise from one example is very common in historical studies. It is related to the laziness of people who want simple answers when in fact history is often very complex. Paddle demonstrates a complex view of the history of the thylacine.
Not being an evolutionist I see the history of the thylacines differently than Paddle though I have great respect for the effort and professionalism he has put into this book. Paddle is honest in the sense he would be extremely happy to be proved wrong and that the thylacine still exists. (Not stated in this book but in an interview.)

An Excellent Beginning to DSLR Photography

The author, David Busch, has done a wonderful job in detailing this book for a "hobbyist photographer" like me. Years ago my first encounter with a DSLR was not one that I felt confident about, so I decided take a class. I found that the class was dedicated to taking pictures and not explaining the camera itself. I decided that I'd better stick to point and shoot. But more recently I have since learned that there are so many types of photography which have captured my interest and a better understanding of the DSLR camera, how it works and what it can add to the enjoyment of working with such a multifaceted tool. Because of the 5th edition of David Busch's book I have found answers, images and ideas that I can use to further my interest in using my DSLR to enhance my interest and understanding of photography that I wasn't even aware of. I am now a very happy "hobbyist".

I am totally amazed at how practical and clear the instructions are

I thought I knew what I needed to know about photography but I decided to flip thru it because I am giving it to my mother to go with her digital camera for xmas. I am totally amazed at how practical and clear the instructions are. I might have to re read up on stuff myself.

A terrific book!!!

I think this book is amazing!!! Very informative on the cameras and lenses, plus everything else is made so easy to understand. This book makes me want to be a better photographer. I really am going to use a lot more "manual" settings now instead of the program modes. Very easy to understand!!
