This is the best book I have ever read.

I first saw the movie Field of Dreams when I was in the 3rd grade, I loved the movie so much. Then in the 6th grade my teacher started to read us the book, but never even came close to finishing, I was disappointed. Then, this year (10th grade) I read it over Christmas break, and I couldn't put it down. I have never read a book that could calm me down and not make me sleepy. I had to get my wisdom teeth out and I was currently reading that book, everytime I got nervous I read the book and it relaxed me! I recomend this to anyone who likes baseball or just loves to read. Even if you don't like to read I still recomend it! It is better than the movie and I still think the movie is good, there is just to much to capture. I could read that book again and again! So, I recomend it to everyone!

Some very good stories...

I enjoyed this book as any Kinsella fan would. I found some of the stories true gems, but others I found somewhat uninteresting. This is not Kinsella's greatest selection, but it shows a different side of the author and some of the stories are more adult oriented content. I enjoyed the stories 'Fiona the First', 'Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa', 'A Picture of the Virgin' and 'A Blacksmith Shop Caper' as the real good ones. Those alone are worth the book, so you won't be disappointed overall.

Chapter 1 of novel SHOELESS JOE is this book's title story!

"Fiona the First," the opening story in this collection, was cited for excellence by Stanley Elkin and Shannon Ravenel in the 1980 edition of BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES.
Speaking to bibliographer Ann Knight in 1983, Kinsella admitted that a few details from this story are semi-autobiographical: "The lady who keeps saying, 'He can put his shoes under my bed,' I saw at a Vancouver Mounties game in Seattle in 1954." And, "the business about the stewardess trying to give away a baby happened to me and a young lady at the Vancouver International Airport in 1970 or '71."
These stories celebrate particular relationships: between father and son, brother and sister, perfect strangers, a spiritual icon and her admirers, doctor and patient, father and daughter, bowling buddies, etc. They are classic Kinsella. No fan of his opus will want to overlook these initial, "adult-oriented" adventures into the regions of Magic Realism. These tales are Icarus flyers; they tempt the sun to melt their wings.

Written for the lay person...

who wants to know more about dealing with death. As the two authors, Barbara Okun and Joseph Nowinski, write in their excellent guide, "Saying Goodbye", death these days is often a slower process as people are living longer and living with terminal disease. A lingering death of a loved-one gives the family and friends and the patient a chance to prepare for the inevitable. And preparing can be everything from emotional to physical to financial matters. Throughout the book, Okun and Nowinski use the voices of people going through the process which gives the reader a more casual feel than perhaps a text book on the subject might do. This book is written for the lay person and simple, easily digestible terms are used to make the subject of a loved one's approaching death a little easier to deal with.

Okun and Nowlinski redefine the Five Stages of Grief, as originally conceived by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her 1970 book, "On Death and Dying". They bring it up-to-date, dealing with the new realities of terminal illness and death.

This guide, published by Harvard Health Publications, does not just list references about where you can seek help, but also goes through the steps needed to help both the family/caregivers and the terminal patient. Writing about the emotional toll in the situation, the authors give useful suggestions about forming support groups to help. They also write about the ruptures within a family that terminal illness of one member often bring out in the open that have long been hidden. Okun and Nowinski are excellent writers and the subject of terminal illness and death are delicately, yet forthrightly handled.

VERY Helpful

As I prepared to participate in the care-taking of my mother's last few months of her life, which was cut short to 24 days, I took comfort in learning how to deal with the emotional roller coaster that my mother and my siblings would go through. The most important thing I learned is that people that are dying can still hear you. Through the pain, through the closed eyes - they can hear you. I know this because I spoke to my mother and when she still could hear me and respond. She would respond with a grunt or a shake of her head and I knew she could hear me. Taking to her about memories of our childhood made her happy and telling stories where she didn't have the stress of answering or participating in the conversation, was perfect - for her and for my siblings and I. It was SO important to learn that in time to implement it. And then she slipped away...

Saying goodbye is for anyone

For myself, this book brought up important questions and provided insight for helpful and healing ways of processing the ubiquitous fact of death and dying specifically today, with advances in medicine. I came across a blog post by Dr.Nowinski and it piqued my interest enough to seek out this and another even more recent book he authored. I read it because the moden day dying process (a longer one then ever before, in many cases) is all too hushed, fragmented and certain real apects seem taboo -- the subject matter is less an immediate concern right now for me then it might be for others - nonetheless it is an absolute keeper and source book for living in today's world.

Usonian architecture explained

3.5 starts would have been my rating if given that option.
The Natural House is essentially Wrights explanation/defense/sales-pitch for his Usonian houses. The first chapter (Organic Architecture) was written by Wright in 1936 and originally published in The Architect's Journal of London. The next four chapters (Building the New House, In the Nature of Materials: A Philosophy, The Usonian House I, The Usonian House II) were written by Wright and first published in 1943 in "An Autobiography". The remainder of the book was written by Wright in 1953-4.
I found the first 67 pages to be a difficult read. I am not an architect and suspect that an architect would get more out of these first three chapters. These chapters were part autobiography, part history, part philosophy and part contemptuous rant against all architects who were not his own students. Having plodded through those pages, I feel that I could have skipped them.
Suddenly, on the 68th page, the book takes a dramatic turn and becomes a much easier read. This last three-fourths of the book explains Unosian architecture in very accessible terms. There are multiple examples of houses with photographs of exterior and interior views and floor plans. I found the floor plans to be the most beneficial and interesting part of the book and would buy the book for the floor plans alone.
In the explanatory text Wright discusses building location, foundations, lighting, materials, insulation, heating, cooling, furnishings, contractors, etc. Each topic is discussed in fairly general terms, but since Wright's approach is quite different from most other architects, the general explanations are valuable.
In the chapter titled "Grammar: The House as a Work of Art" Wright again waxes philosophical, but this time in a more understandable manner (having written this part of the book much later than the first chapters).
Wright devotes 11 pages to a brief explanation of what he calls the Usonian Automatic. This is essentially a cinderblock and steel rod home that can be assembled by the homeowner.
Wright closes the book by comparing his philosophy of architecture to that of the Orient. He concludes that even though the two philosophies are similar, his is original because he developed it ignorant of the Orient's philosophies and only learned of those philosophies after his philosophy was developed.
Having read the book I feel that I have a much better understanding of Wright as a person than I did from having read books about his architecture (the benefit of reading the first 67 pages). I also now have a very good understanding of Usonian architecture.

Relavent classic

Written in 1954, this short book is somewhat dated but Wright's words and thoughts are universal enough to be meaningful today. Wright's view of "The Natural House" adds cultural understanding to how we build and describes an idealistic precursor to contemporary "eco-building." Required reading for anyone who is interested in the curtural context of the building process.

I probably shouldn't say this, but...

I was a civilian contractor at an un-named Naval installation when the Red Cell captured the Credit Union (against the 'rules') and if I remember also the McDonald's on base. They infiltrated the base commander's office and left a gift and departed. They were chewed out for breaking the 'rules' to which Dirty Dick indicated that tangos don't play by 'rules.' His telling of the story was not only hilarious, I could actually have walked to most of the places he mentioned and their infil operation was incredibly clever.

But I'm sure I'm just making this up and it never really happened. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
