Fascinating, important, unforgettable
By Richard Reese (author of Understanding Sustainability)
Reverend J. A. L. Singh was ordained in 1912, and became a missionary. He spent over 20 years wandering through the vast forests of deepest, darkest India, saving the souls of Hindus and assorted animists. He travelled with an entourage of at least 30 men, including drummers, to reduce the odds of becoming lunch for tigers. Along with his wife, he operated an orphanage in Midnapore.

In the autumn of 1920, he began hearing reports from villagers who were living in fear because of "man-ghosts" in the forest. An investigation revealed that the ghosts lived in a termite mound that also served as a wolves' den. Singh's men broke into the den, and out flew three adult wolves and two pups. Inside the den, they found two naked, filthy human girls who viciously bit and scratched the uninvited visitors.

The wolf-girls were captured and taken back to the orphanage, where they were given the names Amala and Kamala. Amala was about one and a half years old, and Kamala was about eight. They could not stand or walk upright, but moved on all fours, with their palms to the ground. They could run so fast that it was difficult to catch them. They frequently tried to escape and return to precious freedom.

The girls did not speak, and preferred to sit by themselves, away from humans, in dark places. They could see very well at night, and had excellent senses of smell and hearing. After midnight, they would prowl around the yard and howl from time to time. They ate and drank like dogs, preferring a diet of milk and raw meat. Clothing was immediately ripped off. They were impervious to cold weather, and did not sweat when it was very hot.

Amala died after a year in captivity. Kamala survived for nine years at the orphanage. Eventually, she learned to stand upright, and walk on two feet, in a wobbly manner. She learned a few words, and could nod yes or no. She died on November 14, 1929. Reverend Singh kept a diary about the wolf girls, and took some photos of them. A number of reputable witnesses verified that this story was true. Skeptical scholars failed to discover evidence of mischief.

Singh's diary became part one of Wolf-Children and Feral Man. The second half of this book, Feral Man, was written by Professor Robert M. Zingg. This book is fascinating, important, and unforgettable.

Zingg shared a number of stories about other wolf children, all quite similar to Amala and Kamala in their appearance, behavior, and failure to "recover" to "normal." In the old days, for religious reasons, Indians did not kill wolves, even if the wolf had their child in its mouth. Poor families often slept outside during the hot season. Field workers would commonly set their babies on the ground. It was perfectly normal and natural for predators to seize easy prey. An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 children were carried away by wolves every year in British India. Some of the kids were not eaten, but raised by the wolves.

One story described the capture of a wolf-boy who was about ten years old. He had been snatched by wolves when he was four. He could pronounce one sound: "aboodeea." At night, he would sit on a hillside, where he would be visited by his wolf relatives. They would play and howl together. Finally, the boy found his opportunity, and ran away. He was never seen again.

A 1920 story told of an Indian boy who spent three years with leopards. Many children were raised by bears in India, Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, Turkey, and Hungary. There were also wolf-children in Europe.

In 1931, peasants in El Salvador discovered a wild child, but were not able to capture him until 1933. When captured, Tarzancito was about five years old. He had lived independently, dining on fruits, fish, and other forest delicacies. Five years old!

Feral humans fiercely resisted efforts to capture them. In captivity, they often made efforts to escape, even jumping from second floors. Some were chained to trees. They were not fond of the funny-looking creatures who wore clothing, ate cooked food, slept indoors, held them against their will, and tirelessly tried to force them into living a totally unnatural way of life. Freedom was their one and only desire.

The German scholar, August Rauber, believed that feral humans were not ordinary idiots by birth; they were idiots because of isolation. They suffered from dementia ex separatione. The unfortunate feral idiots were separated from the wonders of civilization, and were reduced to living in harmony with the ecosystem. Heretical wordsmiths cannot help but wonder if it's not the other way around. Could a global pandemic of dementia ex separatione be hammering billions of civilized people who have lost their connection to life? Could this explain the perplexing daffiness of consumer society?

Maybe 100,000 years ago, humans were more or less ordinary animals. By 40,000 years ago, we were painting in caves, wearing clothes, using tools, and accumulating knowledge. We had developed culture -- a powerful and dangerous thing. Cultural evolution could change human society a million times faster than genetic evolution, and cultural evolution has never been guided by wisdom or foresight. About 10,000 years ago, exceedingly clever humans invented catastrophe -- the domestication of plants and animals -- and cultural evolution blasted into warp speed.

In Ishmael, Daniel Quinn described two forms of human cultures: Takers (civilized) and Leavers ("primitive"). The emergence of Taker societies created a sharp break from relative harmony and balance. As it took root, Taker culture resembled an aggressive cancer that grows as quickly as possible until it kills its host. Today, Leaver cultures are on the brink of extinction.

The Taker bubble is temporary, because it is totally unsustainable. It will end either by wisdom or by self-inflicted wounds. Our current disaster could never have happened without the development of culture -- the ongoing accumulation of knowledge and technology.

Is it possible that our acquisition of culture by 40,000 years ago moved us beyond the point of no return? We ceased being ordinary animals, and turned into unstable loose cannons, entrusting our fate to the freaky whims of cultural evolution. Were Leaver cultures simply embryonic forms of slowly developing disasters? How many of them refused to accept new things like horses, maize, guns, and iron pots?

Amala and Kamala were not Takers or Leavers. They had no culture. They show us a third category of humankind that we routinely disregard -- free people -- ordinary animals (like every newborn baby). Free people had no language, no tools, no fire, no self-awareness, no directed thinking, no sin, no guilt, no greed. They could catch birds, fish, and frogs with their bare hands, and eat them raw. They ate birds' eggs, roots, nuts, berries. They could survive for years in a state of pure freedom, while leaving no scars on the ecosystem. This was the norm for almost the entire hominid journey.

Takers, with their plows and armies, could easily suppress Leavers. Leavers, with their spears and bows, could easily suppress the free people. The free people were completely in harmony with their ecosystem, but were sitting ducks for human societies having cultures.

Zingg quoted a frustrated gent who failed to tame the Wild-boy of Aveyron, "In spite of five years' ingenious tutelage, the boy never became a normal human being." What exactly is a normal human being?

Fascinating Accounts
By Juanita R. Violini
This book is a fantastic account of feral children from Rev Singh's orphanage in Minapore,India. Illustrations are reproductions of old black and white photographs, which add to the value of the book. It was first published in 1942
and contains journal entries documenting observations in an interesting and detailed way; one example is when he describes Kamala, a girl raised by wolves, being attracted to the swing at the orphanage.

Other cases are also documented at the back of the book, which is a must have for researchers on feral children and cases of extreme isolation.

Smart and independent, 11-year-old Khyber lives with her mom, Tammy, a former stripper, and her autistic twin brothers in a poor Toronto neighborhood. Though she doesn’t have a lot in common with her classmates, Khyber does have wonderfully eccentric friends: Valerie, Toronto’s meanest waitress, and X, a homeless woman in hiding from “the secret police.” Despite having to deal with pompous social workers who make her mother cry and ignorant kids who make remarks about her brothers, Khyber manages to enjoy herself, poring over atlases, planning exotic journeys, and taking peanut butter sandwiches to X. But when Tammy decides to move her sons to a group home for proper care, Khyber’s world starts to crumble. She fights with her mom and then gets expelled from school. To make matters worse, X suddenly disappears. Khyber sets out to find her in a wild all-night odyssey of self-discovery.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8-Eleven-year-old Khyber lives with her mother and autistic twin brothers in a low-income area in Toronto. In addition to her problems at school (she skipped two grades and doesn't fit in), she deals with her mother's decision to send her brothers to a group home, some menacing skinheads, a false accusation of vandalism that gets her expelled, and a search for her homeless friend, "X." Khyber loves her family and gladly goes beyond what one would expect of a child in order to help her mother and "X." Her friends are an odd assortment of characters, all adults. There are just too many quirks and issues to make this book believable. Some aspects of the plot are far-fetched and everything falls into place just a little too neatly at the end. On the other hand, all of the characters seem real and natural. Khyber is a likable protagonist and readers will appreciate how she copes with her issues. If they can accept some of the improbable circumstances, they will enjoy the story.

From Booklist
"I call myself Khyber after the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan," says the feisty 11-year-old protagonist of Ellis' fine first novel. Khyber fantasizes about visiting the Pass and other exotic places to escape the harsh realities of her life, including her odd-girl-out status at school. Living on public assistance with her single mom and five-year-old autistic twin brothers, Khyber retreats emotionally from others, trusting only a few adults, including a mysterious, homeless woman whom Khyber names X. Later, skinheads rough up Khyber and X, and at the same time, some school windows are broken. When Khyber is blamed for the vandalism, she must find X to corroborate the attack and provide an alibi. It would be easy for the book to drown in bleakness, but Khyber's strong spirit and believable personality will draw readers in and make them wonder about the characters' future adventures. Look For Other Novels About Autism
By BeatleBangs1964
Khyber, 11 chose her name because in her words the one she was given at birth was "unmentionable." At no time do readers ever learn what name she had that she abhorred. She even renames her impoverished neighborhood in Canada "Pauper's Park" which would have been a more apt description of the place.

Her penchant for renaming others is extended to a homeless woman in a neighborhood park whom she calls X. She brings her food and chats her up when she is babysitting her younger brothers.

Her twin brothers, David and Daniel, 5 have infantile or Kanner's Autism. Both boys wear diapers and are nonverbal. David was named after former Monkee Davey Jones because their single mother is an avid Monkees' fan. I thought that was adorable and funny.

Khyber is not without challenges. She and her single mother learn to dodge social workers and other professionals who insist the boys need more care; she is the brunt of school bullies who torment her for being the youngest in her grade and worst of all, taunt David and Daniel. That is the one line Khyber won't allow anyone to cross. She defends her brothers like a tigress, attacking anyone who dares criticize them. The one funny part in this book was when David ran up to Khyber when she was in a school play. When her nemesis makes cruel comments about him, Khyber delivers her line with a swear thrown in for good measure prior to stomping off stage. I thought that was funny.

Things take a down turn when their mother decides to enroll the boys in a residential program. Khyber is accused of vandalism. She runs away and a group of female Elvis Impersonators come through so she doesn't serve time in Jailhouse Rock. She learns the lesson of "don't be cruel" and it is a return to Heartbreak Hotel with a rather bizarre ending.

I thought this book was just mediocre. If I could have rated it 2.5 stars, I would have.

Very Good, But Sad
By laura01
Khyber is living in poverty in a poor part of Toronto with her family. Her father abandoned them when Khyber's two autistic brothers were born. I can tell you, having an autistic child is not easy. Autistic children cannot look at you in the eye or even talk. Plus, it costs money for treatment. And you can imagine, with the shortage of money that Khyber's mother has, it would be hard to pay for treatments for two autistic children. But Khyber loves her brothers dearly and would never let anything bad happen to them. But one thing Khyber looks forward to in life is her friend X, who lives in the park. X is a very mysterious old lady who is intensely afraid of the secret police and will not tell Khyber her real name. When X suddenly dissapears, Khyber is devastated. She just had to find X. Her journey would probably be one of the scariest things that would ever happen to her. read on...

Looking For X

My friend decided to read looking for x, and loved it. so i decided t give it a try. i loved it! from the minutte i picked it up i was hooked! i remember when i started to finish the last few chapters i felt so sad because i would never find a better book. khyber is such a wonderfum independent, determaned girl. tammy is such a loving mother, and the twins were so interesting. all the characters were incredible and easy to relate to on different levels. the setting was quite different, and even though she did grow up in a rough place you would still want to be there just for the feeling. the story line is incredible, there are always twists and you never knew what to expect. i like how it always changes and when one thing happens the changes the whole plot.

good book.
By Nick A.
I got this book for my CAD class(we modeled the problems with solidworks). I actually needed to get the newer version of this (one with the green cover) but i got this and pretty much all the problems were the same. Some were numbered differently and the pages were off a little. For example, the problems on lets say, page 90 of the green one , start in page 87 in this one. I just compared with my friend who had the new one and found the problem on mine.
The book itself is good, they have alot of problems to practice with, though no solutions are given for these. But the chapters explain stuff quite well with alot of pictures and examples showing the definitions. Its a thin book and easy to carry around as well.

Groundwater
By VM
Overall a very good book. This is the text our Hydrogeology professor, Dr.J.Toth used in the 80's. It covers a great deal of information on facies, flow nets, hydrologic cycle, chemical evolution, groundwater resource evaluation, contamination, groundwater processes and a really good section on chemical principles and mass action. This is not a quantitative text, the discussions on finite difference and finite element methods include very little math. I would have also liked to have seen a better discussion of well hydraulics. I still turn to it for a reference as it is a very useful book.

A rigorous and quantitative basic reference
By Jim
This is a good complement to "Groundwater Hydrology" by Todd. Freeze and Cherry is more detailed, rigorous, and quantitative than Todd, but it doesn't communicate the big picture quite as well. As well as an undergraduate textbook, this book is an essential resource for anyone working in the field.

As Good as Others
By Ori Sartono
This book is a one for all kind of book, which is a good thing to have as a reference. The authors are mainly researchers, thus more theories than practical side explained. So, as a hydrogeologist , I also use other books by Todd, Bouwer, and Fetter at works.

I don't know why Dr. John A. Cherry does not include more on the groundwater contamination, as he is one of the "stars" on that field.

Other Peoples' Myths: The Cave of Echoes, by Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty

Other People's Myths celebrates the universal art of storytelling, and the rich diversity of stories that people live by. Drawing on Biblical parables, Greek myths, Hindu epics, and the modern mythologies of Woody Allen and soap operas, Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty encourages us to feel anew the force of myth and tradition in our lives, and in the lives of other cultures. She shows how the stories of mythology—whether of Greek gods, Chinese sages, or Polish rabbis—enable all cultures to define themselves. She raises critical questions about the way we interpret mythical stories, especially the way different cultures make use of central texts and traditions. And she offers a sophisticated way of looking at the roles myths play in all cultures.

Storytelling.....
By Dianne Foster
In OTHER PEOPLE'S MYTHS, Wendy O'Flaherty says "God created people because he loves stories." O'Flaherty teaches History of Religion at the University of Chicago. She says not everyone will approach her book with the same level of interest. The orthodox religious may find it sacriligious while hard-core secular humanists may find it too "religious." However, she believes some secular humanists may be ready to rethink the premise that rational thought is the only way to gain a handle on reality, and it is to them she dedicates this book.
MYTHS will prove illuminating to those who study the history of religion (non-theologians), fascinating to anthropologists who study other cultures, and provocative to theologians looking for inspiration. O'Flaherty's book is a synthesis of many strands from many disciplines--she likes the metaphor of weaving to describe her work.
O'Flaherty says myths can provide alternative answers to the fundamental questions of life and death. Juxtaposed, these answers can be deciphered like a secret code. She says myths are not lies they are fragments of the truth. Myths are the clothes archetypes wear--or structures if you're a structuralist, or parables if you're God.
O'Flaherty, a Jew, is a specialist in Christian and Hindu mythology. She compares and contrasts the various stories of these two cultures with the earlier Greek myths--which she says weren't myths at all by the time they were discussed by Plato, but mere shadows of their former selves--zombies. Myths are alive, they resonate.
She says Allan Bloom (author of THE CLOSING OF THE AMERICAN MIND) says we have lost our classics (stories) and to a certain extent she agrees with him. But, she says, the classics to which Bloom refers never belonged to all the people whereas myths do. She tells of the Mahabharata which the most illiterate peasant in India knows. In the U.S., it's equivalent is the Bible. Most Westerners can recite some sections of the Bible.
As far as the classics go, they don't survive unless they are mythologized. To mythologize a story is to tell it over and over. Not all stories can become myths. Myths bear repeating. There are many different kinds of myths, from those involving Western heros to those about characters in children's tales like Cinderella. (I discovered Cinderella is a Chinese tale--hence the small feet as an aspect of female beauty, and those slippers were fur, not glass--the tale was mistranslated!!).
In the information age, the theater plays a large role in the transmission of cultural myths. Movies are big in the U.S. and big in India. O'Flaherty says her favorite mythical tale is "Through the Looking Glass." She mentions other tales--both written and on film that are mythical including "Star Wars", "The Red Shoes", and "The Wizard of Oz." She says in a pluralistic society, many new tales will be mythologized, and new heros will materialize -- The Lion King, Harry Potter, and James Bond??
O'Flaherty wrote her book in the late 1980s before the "English Patient" was released as a book and film. She says Herodotus was the first person to record the existence of a myth as an aspect of a culture. I kept thinking as I read the book and she cited Herodotus over and over, I must watch "The English Patient" again.

Approachable, Interesting, personal.
By Amazon Customer
I am interested in myths because of my personal experience of them; they are rich in personal meaning. Ms Doniger has had similar experiences it seems. I have framed them more with Jungian and post Jungian understandings. Ms Doniger has framed them within her academic field. While she does deal with archetypes without dismissing them, she mainly uses her extensive knowledge and understanding of hindu myths and her trainig in comparitive religion. Thus there are parts that are quite detailed and the arguments a little involved (hence the 4). But on the other hand her approach in using myths to talk about myths is otherwise quite playful and engaging; using riches to uncover riches. The book also reads like a personal testament, parts of which I identified with. At the beginning she describes her own encunter with Hindu myth (which she was studying) at the time of her father's death. She found the myths helped her much more than her own; hence the title of the book. I, a white western protestant christian, have found greek, hindu and other non-christian myths more helpful and more profoundly meaningful than my faith in dealing with my own difficult circumstances. Perhaps this book is Ms Doniger's journey of trying to understanding why someone elses myth could speak so powerfully to an american jew. In the other of her books i have read 'The Implied Speder' her intellectual rigor and training is evident. Thankfully this book is far more fleshy, less rigorous, more suggestive, more approachable. However we try to understand the mechanism, myths (be they classical, popular, ancient, modern, parochial, foreign, offensive or affirming) are alive and well and mis/behaving as ever they did, regardless of our religous labels. Ms Doniger and I are in agreement on that !

Read a good book, instead.
By Sean Connelly
Ms. Doniger O'Flaherty writes as if she has escaped the narrow bounds of her Jewish upbringing to understand a more universal world of mythology, and, by this method, enhanced her understanding of Jewish mythology. Sadly, she seems not to have escaped the bounds at all. She writes in circles, telling us that it is neither possible, nor beneficial to create new mythologies and new rituals, though she does not explain why this is so. She fails to grasp that all myths and rituals had origins at some moment in time, and did not come to us with the first spark of human life, sacred and divine. She starts to deal with issue, but skirts it, as she does most issues. In then end, she is trapped by the narrow limits of Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. In the narrowness of her view, including Hinduism seems to imply that she has stretched her mind to encompass the universal. Much that should be scholarship seems to generate from her own hopes, fears, and neurotic world view. I liken her to a psycologist, out to heal herself and treating her illness as a universal. While every writer writes from a perspective that is uniquely their own, Ms. Doniger O'Flaherty's perspective is self-absorbed, and she shows an incredible inability to look at the world through the eyes of others. Worse, she is painfully unaware of this defect. Unless you are one who finds bad scholarship amusing, I suggest looking to another source for an introduction to the field of folklore.

Points out spending areas to reconsider
By A reader
I read this book last night. Thanks for having it on the Kindle free list. The book highlighted several people who used to spend a lot and now have cut back their expenses. The spending areas that were cut most often were cable tv (eliminate it and get netflix), alcohol, dining out. The examples were very helpful. I was expecting to see more in the way of how to live on just $8000/yr but I'm not complaining. The book was worth the few hours to read.

Note to the writer: please consider editing the text for corrections. There were multiple sentences with extra words that didn't belong or spelling errors. Thanks for writing this book. It was a worthwhile read.

Not what I was looking for...
By Kathleen
As someone constantly striving to be more frugal and to live a more simple and minimalist life, this ebook was recommended based on my past purchases, and it looked like a book that might have something to offer in terms of giving me an action plan to move towards an anti-consumerist lifestyle. And while I did find parts of the book to be somewhat useful in at least defining my current economic state (Gold Zone vs. Green Zone vs. Neutral Zone vs. Yellow Zone vs. Orange Zone vs. Red Zone vs. Dead Zone), I didn't really think the advice for moving out of your current zone and up to the next level of financial stability very helpful. Some of the advice included tips such as declare bankruptcy because it's probably hopeless, which might actually be good advice, but the book does not inform the reader about the negative implications of declaring bankruptcy. Other pieces of advice such as hope you get a family gift did not sit well with me either. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to the person striving to save money and live frugally. Of course, if you are Amazon Prime, the book is free, and for that price, I'd say it's worth it. Two stars.

Refreshing new take
By K.Rain
I really enjoyed this book. I read zillions of books in the personal finance and money-and-happiness genre and I was pleasantly surprised to find some new gems in this book. This book is not about extreme coupon clipping or hoarding or any other crazy behavior you associate with frugal nut jobs. Instead it is more philosophical and shows how your emotional health is related to your spending and then gives you practical tips on how to knock it off. For example: the difference between tools and distractions. Tools are things you need to live (and they include cellphones, internet, good food etc), but distractions are comfort items we buy because we are stressed, overwhelmed, lonely etc. They use excellent brain/behavior research and marketing research to support their ideas. I agree it is a little bit "unpolished" but the message is excellent. I look forward to more from this author.
