A Struggle for Rome, by Felix Dahn

It was a sultry summer night of the year five hundred and twenty-six, A.D.
Thick clouds lay low over the dark surface of the Adrea, whose shores and waters were melted together in undistinguishable gloom; only now and then a flash of distant lightning lit up the silent city of Ravenna. At unequal intervals the wind swept through the ilexes and pines on the range of hills which rise at some distance to the west of the town, and which were once crowned by a temple of Neptune. At that time already half ruined, it has now almost completely disappeared, leaving only the most scanty traces.
It was quiet on the bosky heights; only sometimes a piece of rock, loosened by storms, clattered down the stony declivity, and at last splashed into the marshy waters of the canals and ditches which belted the entire circle of the sea-fortress; or a weather-beaten slab slipped from the tabled roof of the old temple and fell breaking on to the marble steps—forebodings of the threatened fall of the whole building.
But these dismal sounds seemed to be unnoticed by a man who sat immovable on the second step of the flight which led into the temple, leaning his back against the topmost step and looking silently and fixedly across the declivity in the direction of the city below.
He sat thus motionless, but waiting eagerly, for a long time. He heeded not that the wind drove the heavy drops which began to fell into his face, and rudely worried the full long beard that flowed down to his iron belt, almost entirely covering his broad breast with shining white hair.
At last he rose and descended several of the marble steps: “They come,” said he.
The light of a torch which rapidly advanced from the city towards the temple became visible; then quick and heavy footsteps were heard, and shortly after three men ascended the flight of steps.
“Hail, Master Hildebrand, son of Hilding!” cried the advancing torch-bearer, as soon as he reached the row of columns of the Pronaos or antehall, in which time had made some gaps. He spoke in the Gothic tongue, and had a peculiarly melodious voice. He carried his torch in a sort of lantern—beautiful Corinthian bronze-work on the handle, transparent ivory forming the four-sided screen and the arched and ornamentally-perforated lid—and lifting it high, put it into the iron ring that held together the shattered centre column…

Highly recommended!
By George Prattos
This book was one of my more memorable reading experiences. The story takes place in Italy during 6th century AD, and spans just a few vital decades in the violent and lesser known history of Italy at that time. It describes the power struggle between the Goths wanting to preserve their past glory and retain their rule in the Italy they already occupy, the Byzantines who want to take over Italy, and the Romans who want an Italy free of both.

This is an extremely well written book, and the translator has done an admirable job in rendering the English version. As the translator indicates, it is not a history book, but a historical novel. It is based on fact, with the author having taken liberties based on his own convictions and prejudices. The book succeeds in creating lasting impressions of the Goths, the Romans and the Byzantines of the time, which are difficult to dispel.

The initial chapters are a bit hard going, mainly attributed to the unfamiliar names. But the plot picks up rapidly, and becomes gripping to the point of not wanting to put the book down. A high level of excitement is maintained throughout, and it reduces in a seemingly appropriate manner on the approach to the inevitable finale.

A very large number of key characters continuously weave their way through the story, and the book delves deeply into the minds of these key players, creating the impression that the reader is actually there and part of the goings on. There is a constant turning of events, which is extremely surprising. Hardly anything turns out as planned. A large number of acts of war took place in those years accompanied by extreme barbarity on all sides. Brutality is part of the historical reality, and it is portrayed with quite active descriptions, but thankfully without undue emphasis on the gore. The number of casualties was huge, with many of the victims were innocent civilians.

The central figure of Cethegus could have served as a blue print for Machiavelli's The Prince, displaying all the traits advised in the latter. I couldn't help but fantasize that Machiavelli must have had Cethegus as a mentor! At every turn of The Struggle my mind kept going back to The Prince. In order to achieve his goals, this man constantly resorts to a high level of underhanded and devious behaviour that never ceases to amaze the reader. At the same time, one warms to the character, while constantly wondering whether such repugnant thinking is really possible of a human being. Thankfully, the character is a creation of the author, but evidence abounds through the centuries that the world has such people

I recommend this book to lovers of historical novels.

Once Upon A Time In Rome...
By Robert Kvinnesland
It's high time that this forgotten classic of German Literature was again translated and made available to the English speaking world. (In 1878 an English version was published, now long out of print and virtually impossible to find.) It's not only one of the finest examples of the historical novel genre, it's simply a downright gripping tale, a sweeping epic chock-full of memorable heroes and villains and compelling events, most of whom and which are based upon the actual history that has come down to us from that era. Hat's off to Herb Parker for resurrecting this tour de force, a book which should be in every public library and personal collection of those of Germanic heritage.

Greek tragic meets Sword&Sorcery Bloodshed
By Cornelius Kappabani
A struggle for Rome is about the Goths who lived and ruled in Italy, in particular Theoderich of Ravenna and his hairs and their struggle against Cethegus the roman who desires to rule the nation. It's a story full of betrayel, forbidden love, war and heroes who need not fear to take the lyre.

It's a story about raising your fist against an impending doom, to grin death in the face and keep true to your oaths, about friendship and mortal enemies.

Interestingly this book, written twelve years before Tolkiens birth, is also a good source when studying the Lord of the Rings.

Good... for Mucha fans.
By Malone Remington
Not much to say about this book... I needed a few large Mucha prints and in that respect this book served it's purpose.
Not even close to a full collection but definitely beautiful.

Keep in mind, this is a book of his works... not much else in terms of content and history.

A valuable asset if you want to use Moodle in a commercial enterprise
By Mary Cooch
Moodle 2.o for Business is part of the Packt Moodle series and is co-written by Jason and Jeanne Cole and Gavin Henrick. It's refreshingly different from the other Moodle books in that its focus is not on students in an educational institution learning, say geography; rather; it concentrates on another major global use of Moodle - commercial enterprise. It shows how a company, whatever size, can benefit from Moodle's features to improve its recruitment, training, staff development and internal communication processes. Written as a "Beginner's guide"; its language is accessible and, despite being collaboratively authored, it reads smoothly in a consistent style. (Hands up -I was one of the three technical reviewers of the book.)

Chapter 1 starts us off by suggesting ways to download Moodle to experiment/play with it before using it "in anger" - as the modern saying goes! We learn the very basics of course administration, adding resources and a discussion space. I particularly liked the "E-learning framework for implementing Moodle" section where we consider ADIME (Align/Develop/Implement/Measure/Evaluate) and also the case study at the end of the chapter. The inclusion of real-life case studies is an inspired Plus to this book, I believe, setting in a genuine context the features explored in the chapters and sharing Moodle experiences from the world of business.

Chapter 2 explains how potential employees can create new accounts (safely!) on your Moodle site and how the assignment module can be used to allow them to send in their CVs. Employers can use the assignment grading facility to rate the applications; the quiz module can serve as a means of administering competency tests and the choice module can help schedule interviews. This whole chapter appealed to my mindset because I love tweaking/adapting/manipulating Moodle to do what you need it to do, and here were whole scenarios I hadn't considered before.

Chapter 3 handles the need to provide product knowledge both internally and externally. (Incidentally, an added bonus for me reading this book was that not only did it give me some ideas about using Moodle for business, it actually also taught me about business!) We looked at different course formats, created a glossary f0r specific terminology, a chat session for role-playing and a database for peer reviewing created product knowledge sheets. Another case study at the end of the chapter gives, in this instance, AA Ireland the opportunity to pass on advice for businesses planning to implement Moodle.

Chapter 4 can be downloaded as a freebie taster! Its focus is how to use Moodle to deliver in-house staff training such as legal compliance or health and safety to selected groups of employees. Here, the authors take us through the Lesson module and explain how to put groups and groupings to good effect. Completion tracking, whereby employees can track their progress is also explained in this chapter, leading usefully on to the (new to Moodle 2.0) concept of course completion.

Chapter 5 is a very thorough explanation of the use of outcomes in Moodle - a feature I sometimes think is underused (but maybe that's just me?) Outcomes can help with competency tracking and the reader is shown how to add an outcome to an assignment and grade it. I actually learned something myself too - how to import outcomes via CSV- how cool is that?!

Chapter 6 discusses how to make the most of Moodle's features to support informal communities of practice. So we are talking forums, wikis and collaborative glossaries and databases. The reader also gets to learn about how enabling RSS feeds can improve communication

Chapter 7 is about web conferencing. Moodle doesn't have a built-in web conferencing tool so the authors discuss the various alternatives that can plug in to Moodle - one of them being Adobe Connect Pro (which I assume you have to pay for) and the other being Big Blue Button (which is free) I have experience of both of these and they are both very valuable additions to an online training program. Once more, at the end of the chapter, we have an informative case study - this time from Moodle Partner Remote Learner (for whom the authors work)

Chapter 8 concentrates on repositories and portfolios -ie, how, in Moodle 2.0, you can bring in content from external sources such as Google Docs or Alfresco and you can "push it out" to external sources such as Mahara. As I increasingly use Mahara myself, I can see it as an essential add- on to a commercial Moodle site - indeed, maybe the authors should consider writing Mahara for Business next?

Chapter 9 is about enrolment plugins (how best to get your users onto your Moodle, allowing them to keep their existing corporate usernames and passwords. It also touches on themes as having an attractive corporate image on your Moodle site is essential - themes in Moodle 2.0 are much enhanced and easily customisable. Finally, and just as important, we learn how to change the words on Moodle. By default, Moodle uses terms such as "teacher", "student" and "course" as its origins are based in the educational environment - but it is a simple move to alter these to language more suited to your own organisation.

In summary -if you are thinking of using Moodle in a commercial enteprise, then this is an extremely valuable book :) On a personal level, I enjoyed it because it shows Moodle being used differently from the norm I am familiar with, so it was an inspiring read :)

Moodle 2.0 for Education and Business Beginner Guide
By Veronika Delvaux
This review is based upon the Moodle 2.0 for Business, a Beginner's Guide - "Implement Moodle in your business to streamline your interview, training, and internal communication processes". Authors: Jason Cole, Jeanne Cole, and Gavin Henrick. This book is published by Packt Publishing - open source - BIRMINGHAM - MUMBAI. The Language is English, and the release date was May of 2011.
ISBN : 1849514208
ISBN 13 : 978-1-84951-420-0

Co-authors Jason Cole, PhD, Chief Operating Officer for Remote-Learner US, and his wife, Jeanne Cole, a Senior Project Manager also working for Remote-Learner US. Mr. & Mrs. Cole both have an extended background in learning management systems, Moodle administration, course development, and project management. Gavin Henrick, the third author, has a 10-year background in business, learning, and development. He recently joined Moodle Partner Remote-Learner, and is responsible for organizations in Europe and Canada.

Chapter One introduces statistical data, the comparison between other LMS and positive arguments on why to choose Moodle, and open source learning is outlined to the point that the reader will understand what it is all about. For someone new to and with little knowledge on what Moodle represents, the introduction to Moodle and its history is a very useful section.
The extended explanation on how to install a demo Moodle on a laptop is well written and organized with many helpful screenshots and hints. A detailed course creation section follows, explaining how to add and utilize most all elements available to create a resource-rich and meaningful site. It then explains how to add resources and other elements relevant for a Moodle business site. Moreover, the chronological order and the "how to" screen shots assure the reader that he will not get lost in the process. The case study introduces the reader to real life business problems and how to approach a solution using Moodle. The outlined question and answer model used in the case study is easy to understand, and animates the reader to think outside the box.

The next chapter deals with one of the most important subjects in business. It introduces the reader to setting up the Moodle for use as a hiring, interviewing, training and testing tool for new employees. Getting the insight on how to set up a quiz module and question bank is just one tool Moodle can be used in business. The chapter is well organized and easy to follow. The comprehensive screen shots and hands-on explanations are well documented and trouble-free to understand. Again, the case study at the end of the chapter will guide the reader in the direction of evaluating the process and adding and/or eliminating information relevant to the development.

In Chapter Three, the reader will learn how to create a course, add course content, add and edit topics, add labels and objectives, work with summaries, and create terminology glossaries. The reader will be guided step by step in the process of successfully creating a course relevant for its targeted audience.

Using Moodle to manage compliance training is the topic of Chapter Four. Since it is of utmost importance that employees and trainees comply with rules and regulations, this chapter deals with how to effectively guide the participant through the learning module, track student data, and use data to supplement subject knowledge further.

Chapter Five deals with how to relate outcome to track competency within Moodle. As it is true for schools, the same is true for business; knowledge and proficiency are important to assess student/employee.

Chapter Six touches on "best practice" communities and the importance of problem solving within a group of like-minded people, utilizing communities of practice within an organization, and setting up such groups in Moodle. For example, chats, blogs and Wikis are options of a subject group to communicate amongst each other. The reader also will be introduced to the usefulness of, and how to choose RSS feeds.

Chapter Seven touches on the background of web conferencing and where to find forums on the subject. Since Moodle doesn't come with an incorporated web conferencing tool, the book discusses in detail plug-ins suitable for use in Moodle to establish web conferencing. It also lists the URL to a plug-in database. Elluminate Live and BigBlueButton , as well as Adobe Connect Pro and OpenMeetings are listed there.

Chapter Eight deals with outside components and repositories, such as Google Docs, Mahara and Alfresco. It guides the learner through the process on how to add and use them successfully within Moodle.

The last chapter addresses enrollment methods, such as internal or external enrollment, and authentication plug-ins. There are easy to understand examples on how to employ them. It touches on Moodle themes and how to successfully use the theme selector within Moodle. Lastly, the chapter guides the reader through the process on how to incorporate images into the header and footer, and teaches how to customize the language pack in Moodle.

Summary:
Each chapter is well organized, and extensive insight information is added to give the reader the confidence to master all elements addressed in the guide. Furthermore, Moodle 2.0 for Business -Beginners Guide is written in a way that is easy to understand; it's not only written for the beginner, advanced learners can benefit from to it as well. It fully explains all of its unlimited uses.
The comprehensive summery section helps the reader to reinforce the material covered. The elaborate stream of information, screen shots, and help sections are detail oriented. The easy-to-understand explanations will guide the reader successfully through the process of setting up and utilizing Moodle and its potential to its fullest. The case studies in each chapter are a welcome tool to check if the actions taken are compatible with specific goals.
The "What just happened" header is a very helpful tool to think back on the completed task. Anyone in the process of setting up a Moodle site for any business will be pleased to have found a step-by-step guide for the entire process. Lastly, the multitude of business related information is a further useful learning tool for any reader.

In conclusion, the Moodle 2.0 for Business - Beginners Guide is a priceless resource for any company who would like to explore the opportunity to setup, run, and administer its very own Moodle site.

Good book for corporate users of Moodle 2.0
By mylearningspace
Moodle users in the business sector will particularly benefit from reading this book. The text assumes no knowledge of the Moodle learning management system software, so it does start with the very basics. It then moves into more creative and complex applications of Moodle for business purposes. Topics covered include staff recruitment, product rollouts, compliance training, continual professional development, communities of practice, web conferencing and system integrations. The depth and breadth of coverage is excellent and there are several real world business case studies, also.

Old Chinese: A New Reconstruction, by William H. Baxter, Laurent Sagart

This book introduces a new linguistic reconstruction of the phonology, morphology, and lexicon of Old Chinese, the first Sino-Tibetan language to be reduced to writing. Old Chinese is the language of the earliest Chinese classical texts (1st millennium BCE) and the ancestor of later varieties of Chinese, including all modern Chinese dialects. William Baxter and Laurent Sagart's new reconstruction of Old Chinese moves beyond earlier reconstructions by taking into account important new evidence that has recently become available: better documentation of Chinese dialects that preserve archaic features, such as the Min and Waxiang dialects; better documentation of languages with very early loanwords from Chinese, such as the Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai and Vietnamese languages; and a flood of Chinese manuscripts from the first millennium BCE, excavated or discovered in the last several decades. Baxter and Sagart also incorporate recent advances in our understanding of the derivational processes that connect different words that have the same root. They expand our knowledge of Chinese etymology and identify, for the first time, phonological markers of pre-Han dialects, such as the development of *r to -j in a group of east coast dialects, but to -n elsewhere.

The most up-to-date reconstruction available, Old Chinese: A New Reconstruction brings the methodology of Old Chinese reconstruction closer to that of comparative reconstructions that have been used successfully in other language families. It is critical reading for anyone seeking an advanced understanding of Old Chinese.

Reconstruction can be fun
By Yunder Hurriken
This is one of the most clearly written and entertaining books on the history of the Chinese language I have ever read. The authors show a level of erudition that surpasses that seen in most works published for public consumption. They have spared no detail (unlike many for-public works on linguistics topics), and the net result is a book I will read and re-read for years to come. The prose is careful and clear, and their arguments are strong. If you know a little Mandarin Chinese, the reconstructions of the Chinese spoken millennia ago are sure to surprise you. (I am particularly taken by the fact that the modern Mandarin homophones 五 wŭ and 午 wŭ are reconstructed as *C.ŋˤaʔ and *[m].qʰˤaʔ respectively.) I highly recommend this book to anyone with some knowledge and/or interest in Chinese linguistics.

Welcome work on Old Chinese in a major international scholarly language
By Larry Rogers Logographic
I hope to write a better review later. I saw this in a university library the other day and looked it over for a bit. This book seems to accompany the free online list of reconstructed Old Chinese words given by Baxter and Sagart on Baxter's U of M website, which someone made into a Wiktionary page as well.

Like Schuessler's ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese, it contains a lengthy discussion of Old Chinese syllable structure, and I think some discussion of how syllables and words are reconstructed. It seems to me that what this book and the aforementioned free online lists concern, is what Schuessler calls "Minimal Old Chinese", so Old Chinese as guessed at from known Old Chinese characters. Huh.

This is Old Chinese, as contrasted with Middle Chinese, refering to characters in the Oracle Bone, Bronze, and Classics texts. It seems like Middle Chinese characters and phonetic values date to after these texts and are more associated with the borrowed values for characters used by the Vietnamese, Japanese, Koreans, etc, Han Dynasty colonies (hence, Japanese Kan-ji, "Han characters").

I've noticed that there's differences between the reconstructions of Schuessler in ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese and those online by Baxter and Sagart. Then there's also earlier Karlgren reconstructions of Old Chinese as can be seen in the inexpensive and popular Dover reprint of "Analytical Dictionary of Sino-Japanese Characters", which are quite different from these other two.

I'm not working on it right now, but recently I've quickly examined "A Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese" and noticed that it had Old Chinese and Middle Chinese reconstructed values for some characters. I also became re-aware of Karlgren's "Grammatica Serica Recensa" (Latin: Reconstructed (Language) from the Chinese Letters) and Schuessler's addition to it, with a more transparent title, indicative of what GSR means, "Minimal Old Chinese and Later Han Chinese". In its beginning, he seems to indicate that GSR concerns this concept of "Minimal Old Chinese". I'm not sure the difference between Grammatica Serica Recensa and Analytical Dictionary of Sino-Japanese Characters, but I'm guessing they contain similar material and ideas, arranging characters by phonograms and giving reconstructions with some discussion.

Which is all really exciting.

But what I hope to do in the future is write and sell online glossaries and large corpora for Oracle Bone Script and Bronze Script. Already, I have a dictionary ready based on the 3 books by Keightley. These reconstructions are very popular matter for historical linguists, and I consider myself one, of a sort, but my interest is more in what each character-part originally was a picture of. And then, beyond that, interlinear glossed corpora and accompanying glossaries interest me very much. I strive for accuracy but within a time limit, and use academic resources.

What I hope has been done or will be done, is an exaustive etymological dictionary of the Sinitic family, with special attention given to this Old Chinese stage of the language(s), because this is the one upon which the Oracle Bone Script semantic and phonetic values seem to be based. Inasfar as that's even possible. Indo-European wasn't a written language, but we've got whole books full of reconstructed root words and etymologies. I sound the shelves of the University of Michigan and other universities near me, and search online for titles, and have found nothing to compare for the Sinitic families with Buck's phenomenal "A Dictionary of Selected Synonyms in the Principal Indo-European Languages" or even polyglot glossaries for the Sinitic families. I imagine all this sort of thing might exist in Chinese, but that doesn't do most historical linguists or other scholars much good. All these resources in Chinese (and Japanese) are useless to the majority of scholars in anthropology and linguistics, who learn German and French if anything. So I applaud this current work being in (a major European language) but would like to point out that most relevant material is still in a large but obscure and phenomenally difficult writing system (Modern Chinese) that most trained specialists and other scholars will never learn to read. Most Sinologists don't seem to be aware of it, but the core of anthropology and linguistics, the sciences most relevant to their discipline, run on comparison, which in turn runs on accessible, international scholarly languages, of which Modern Chinese isn't and probably will not be.

Another thing to note about these matters is that historical linguists like Baxter and Sagart are a misunderstood minority in Sinology. Like all other "ancient area studies", Sinologists receive inadequate training in linguists (and anthropology), and as a result produce works which are not as insightful or as useful to people trained sufficiently in linguistics and anthropology as they could be. But each ancient area study is different for its dynamics, and Sinology is notable very small in the West and otherwise mostly Asians living in China and Japan, which is a weird shame and contrary to what's best for the world for sure. So there's a lot for linguists to do for ancient Chinese languages, and a lot of progress that can be made in training Sinologists sufficiently in linguistics, as opposed to just like, "Oh, I took classes like that in grad school but it's not really my thing and nobody uses it, so whatever." So Baxter and Sagart have really done a tremendous thing in making this book, from what I saw of it, and I can only express my wish that it be read and understood by a lot of people, as opposed to being one of those works that gets buried and not really implemented and mulled over. Not that many of us can afford it at $66 used, but we'll do what we can, and in time hopefully it will either get less expensive through reprints or they'll put a free PDF on their websites or something. I have yet to meet a lot of scholars in China of Old Chinese, but I'm sure they could not afford $66 used, if I can't. I have some idea of their budget from what scholarly libraries I have seen in China. If I ever see this book in a university library in China, it will be a photocopy made on a Xerox machine, that's for sure. I also have doubts that Chinese scholars of Old Chinese can even read English (or French or German), to tell the truth.

Knowing what I know of other language families, I find it very interesting that Karlgren called them Archaic Chinese and Ancient Chinese whereas today they prefer Old Chinese and Middle Chinese. At least I would have prefered they keep using Karlgren's names. It's just not like the Western literature for the Chinese language is so huge as that for the Egyptian languages. Consistency in naming and orthography goes a long way. Anyway, it ends up being a big topic regarding these ancient languages. Sometimes I would prefer Karlgren's names on various grounds, though knowing what I do of the relations between languages in Sinitic, these new names seem consistent with the use of Old -, and Middle - for other major language families, though I also have an appreciation for Classical - and even Archaic - as more descriptive of the actual corpus of texts and which stage of ancient languages we're talking about. I mean, if you're a linguist or anthropology, "Classical Egyptian" rings more bells than "Middle Egyptian", despite its scientific precision. And there's a comparable situation afoot with Chinese.

I can imagine why grad students and professors would refrain from typing up reviews for Amazon. Maybe they don't know about it, maybe they don't care. I'm sure there's reviews in academic journals behind pay walls. Anyway, I think all that impedes scholarship, and that Amazon should have some meaty reviews. I'm sure it helps research, as I've met people who have read meaty Amazon reviews.

Setting the Stage
By Sean B. Schoonmaker
This first book of the Horus Heresy series sets the stage for a tale of personal growth and moral responsibility. The central character is Garviel Lorken, 10th Company Captain of the Luna Wolves Legion, though it features many other canonical characters from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K universe, including three Primarchs and a host of infamous figures from later in its history. Canonical characters that make appearances include: Horus, Rogal Dorn, Sanguinius, and Abaddon.

M. Abnett was the ideal author for the beginning of this project. He excels in atmospherics, moral quandary, foreshadowing, and parallels. The book opens with an ominous parallel of how we know the series must end (I assume that most readers will have some familiarity with the history and background of 40K, though it is by no means necessary), and throughout are questions of morality and responsibility that foreshadow future events. Likewise, the growth of the main character, Lorken, is mirrored by the development of those around him.

The Black Library is lucky to have a writer of M. Abnett's talents, and I can only hope that latter writers will be able to live up to his high standards. His characters spring off the page, with good depth, realistic motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. He has a true talent for bringing the gothic feel of the 40K universe to the reader. Both action scenes and more subtle elements of plot development are handled adeptly, including villains every bit as complex and clever as the protagonists. In addition to excellent characters, there's plenty of tech and military hardware for lovers of fluff.

Writing a good climactic ending, one of his few weaknesses, is minimized here, as the entire novel is clearly a preface for the rest of the tale. The only other weakness of the tale is the somewhat clumsy setup for the next book in the series. Literally within the last few pages, he brings an antagonist into the spotlight that has had only minimal prior development. It's one of the only disappointing pieces of writing in the work.

The rest (read: majority) is excellent, and one can hardly wait to see what happens next, particularly given the moral questions and foreshadowing utilized to pique the reader's curiosity.

In short: an auspicious start for the tale, well worth reading for any fan of good sci-fi, but highly recommended for 40K fans.

The inevitable rise and fall of a favored son...
By A. Sandoc
Finally, Games Workshop and the Black Library has seen to it that the story of the Imperium greatest and darkest hour be told in a trilogy of novels. What I am talking about is the culmination of the Emperor of Mankind's Great Crusade to unite the scattered humanity into one galaxt-spanning empire. This first novel in the trilogy, as written by fan favorite Dan Abnett, tells of the time of the Great Crusade's culmination. With the Emperor finally relinquishing the command of all crusading forces to his most favored of his twenty genetically-engineered Primarch sons: Horus.

In background stories throughout the history of Games Workshop's 40K universe, Horus has been described in brief detail as being favored by the Emperor above all the other Primarchs. But other than that Horus has been seen and read by all as a twisted, megalomaniacal despot out to overthrow the Emperor once Chaos has gotten hold of him. In Horus Rising, Dan Abnett paints a portrait of Horus and his Luna Wolves Legion as sympathetic characters who are loyal to the tenets of the Emperor's Great Crusade to a fault. Horus is given personality to make him noble and great in the eyes of not just the men he leads but those of others led by his brother Primarchs. He is akin to Lucifer just before the Fall and throughout the novel, Abnett slips in small seeds of doubts and flaws that will surely lead to his predestined role as the Fallen Angel who will raze and burn the galaxy of Mankind before all is well and done.

Abnett's skill at writing battle scenes, especially up-close combat with Horus and his marines against all comers, shows just why his previous Games Workshop novels have been favorites of fans. Abnett also introduces such characters as Abaddon, Torgaddon and Loken. "Sons" of Horus who seem to represent his conscience in more ways than one. Abaddon most fans already know his fate, but Torgaddon and Loken are characters whose story may lead to damnation or redemption as the time for heresy and war inches closer. the book ends with a simple mention of whats to come with the second leg of the trilogy. Horus and his legion to stop at a backwater system and one of its moons: Davin IV.

Abnett has laid down a great foundation for the trilogy and here's to hoping that Graham McNeill (another fan favorite) continues the trilogy with another great story. I can't wait for the second book, False Gods, to be released. The story of the Horus Heresy has been a long time coming. Here's to not waiting too long to finish the saga.

Some of the finest Sci-fi ever written...
By Tangodown Inc.
If you are a fan of the Warhammer 40K universe, this is a must read without any reservations. Dan Abnett's work has continued to gain in realism and scope and so far Horus Rising is the best book he has ever produced. I say this after having read the book without putting it down yesterday, and previously believing he would be hard pressed to surpass his excellent work with the Gaunt's Ghosts novels. Someday I had hoped someone would bring the horror and intrigue of the Horus Heresy to life in exception verse. Abnett has done so and then some. The feel of the book has gone beyond my own expectations and makes you realize the depth of betrayal that had to have occured to bring fully half the Legions of the Adaptus Astartes into the grip of Chaos. Most of all you will read this and find yourself with favorite characters, dispite the fact you know they are doomed by history. In the first book alone the reader is drawn in by the Majesty of the soon to be lost Luna Wolves Space Marine Legion. Above and beyone that, fans of the other First Founding Legions have the opportunity to glimse their own fore fathers, and more importantly, the Primarchs themselves as they cross paths with the Warmaster in the last days of the Crusade. Having the opportunity to read anything of my own Chapters Primarch, Sanguinious, would have made me buy this book. I was delighted to read an excellent protrayal of the Angel, who was Horus's closest brother. Buy this book... read it, and then read it again before you share it with your friends. We will all be awaiting the next chapter in this series.
