Great reference book for any engineer

I bought this book because I am nuts about cars, but in addition to that, I am also a professional in a technical field. I used this book as a reference during the writing of my doctoral thesis. I found that the Bosch Automotive Handbook had a very comprehensive section on hardness testing, which I used extensively in my research at that time. I am also using this book in calculating the suspension geometry for a car project at home - I use it at work so much that I'm considering the purchase of a second copy for home use.

The book is full of topics that are useful to anyone with a technical background who is interested in the general construction of complex things with moving parts. There is a section devoted to the "tightening of threaded fasteners", where all of the specifications of fasters are described and the forces that are involved are written out. There are fairly detailed sections on welding and other joining methods. There are sections on wheel offset, tire construction, NVH measurements (noise, vibration, and harshness), wear testing, fuel efficiency, coatings of surfaces, vehicle dynamics, the balance of forces in a piston engine, and fuel injection. There are a great couple of pages on "empirical values and data for calculation" which compares parameters between engine types, such as Diesel, gas, Stirling, and rotary engines. There are many pages dedicated to the calculation of engine parameters such as displacement, compression ratio, final compression temperature, piston acceleration, fuel supply, and piston pressure. I have actually used some of these once or twice and I love the fact that I have them on hand, even if I don't really need them.

Ever wonder what the difference between a screw-type and Roots-type supercharger is? It's in this book. Ever wonder how a wastegate works? It's right here. Fuel injector design, spark plug gaps... all of it is in here.

The best thing about the book is that even if it does not offer a lot of detail on a particular topic, there is at least a paragraph devoted to the subject with enough information and context so that the reader is armed with the tools to search for more meaningful literature on the topic.

One gripe: at least in this edition, I don't see anything useful on controller area networks (CAN) or how one goes about programming them or controlling them. CAN is becoming an essential part of automotive manufacturing and I would expect that someday Bosch will cover this topic more thoroughly.

With that said, I consider this book to be one of the "must haves" for technical reference books. With a recent edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Perry's Chemical Engineer's Handbook, Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, Machinery's Handbook, Metals Handbook, and the Bosch Automotive Handbook, one person has an excellent overview of the entire Industrial Revolution. I call this library of books the "Build-Your-Own-Civilization Library". If you like handbooks (I cherish them), get this one, then go buy the others.

Excellent Overview for Gearheads

This book is an excellent overview of all aspects of vehicle design theory, basic principles, and reference information. It is NOT a guide to auto repair and is NOT for someone who is only interested in fixing and/or improving auto performance. The best description is to say it is the one single most useful book a newly graduated engineer should have and read upon entering the field of vehicle engineering and engine design. This is not to say it is beyond non-engineers, but only to say that if you are not interested in the theory and principles of automotive design and operation, this book is not for you.

Good Automotive Mechanical Engineering Reference

This book is not for someone looking to learn about automotive mechanics or how to fix and repair cars. This book contains a fair amount of formulas and tables that are useful to those who work in the area of automotive design. It does describe briefly all aspects of the automoble such has how an ignition, starter, steering, fuel management, braking system, etc. work but not to the point that it would be useful for someone trying to troubleshoot automotive problems. If you're looking for your first automotive textbook to learn about the systems on your car then this book is not it. If you're looking for an indepth HANDBOOK for a quick reference for any automotive aspect (that you once knew but now forgotten) then it's worth every penny. The book fits in the palm of your hand and is 1-inch thick. Like a bible in many respects.

After 1945, he became heavily involved in the establishment of the United Nations and was a key player in the development of NATO. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during 1947 and 1948, Vandenberg helped rally support for President Truman's foreign policy―including the Marshall Plan―and his leadership contributed to a short-lived era of congressional bipartisanship regarding international relations.

Kaplan draws on his long career writing about international affairs to offer a useful biography of Senator Vandenberg, one of the most important voices for a bipartisan, internationalist foreign policy in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. This book fills an important niche for the study of American foreign policy in the Twentieth Century, and contributes to the understanding of one of the key architects of Republican mainstream orthodoxy on international relations. For too long Vandenberg's critical contribution to the postwar global system, and to the Republican shift away from isolationism, has received inadequate attention. This biography is most timely in light of current debates on the role of the United States in the world and the challenge of sustaining democratic capitalism. I found it to be a good read, with interesting perspectives on the founding of the United Nations and on Senator Vandenberg's dark horse presidential candidacies during the New Deal.

An important new book on an important United States Senator - Michigan Republican Arthur Vandenberg. Lawrence Kaplan traces Vandenberg's evolution from a committed isolationist to an influential internationalist, a "conversion" that provided Vandenberg an unusual, even unprecedented, role in helping shape U.S. foreign policy from Pearl Harbor to the birth of NATO.

In an age when bipartisanship seems to be a quaint relic of the past, Kaplan's book reminds us that Vandenberg could be a very partisan Republican, but still find a way to cooperate with Democratic presidents on foreign policy issues. More American politicians would do well to emulate Vandenberg's admonition that partisan politics should stop at the waters edge. This is an important addition to the scholarship of U.S. foreign policy in the 20th Century, as well as the history of the Senate.

Beyond Capitalist Mythology

Democracy For The Few is an outstanding scholarly review of capitalism as not just an economic model but as an entire social system. It brilliantly treats the contradiction between democratic and elitist values, relentlessly exposing the realities of class power and powerlessness. The author doesn't simply make assertions; he carefully considers the arguments underpinning capitalist legitimacy and finds them sorely wanting on rational grounds. He covers all the major themes of capitalism vs. democracy: the grotesquely lopsided distribution of wealth; corporate propaganda masquerading as objective journalism; self-serving mythology about the U.S. Founding Fathers; the subjugation of labor; the amelioration of capitalist exploitation with social democratic advances (the New Deal); the socialization of risk and the privatization of profit; military intervention abroad and the maintenance of a global system of power; ecological catastrophe and the attack on social programs; institutionalized injustice masquerading as law; political repression and incipient police state tactics; the international dimension of class struggle; elections as public relations extravaganzas; the buying of the Congress; the president as Commander in Chief of world empire; the partisan courts, and suggestions about how to transcend this system with real democracy.

Modern Day Democracy Is Broken

This book is so profound and well written that I have a hard time leaving anything out of my review, the entire chapter 19 Democracy for the Few starting on page 268 is a good place to begin at the section titled "What is To Be Done" starting on the bottom of page 277 is vital must read material, another must read section is chapter 13 "Mass Media: For the Many, by the Few" starting on page 163, the section titled "The Ideological Monopoly" beginning on the top of page 167 is especially delicious. If you only buy one book a year this is the book you should buy and carefully read every last word in it.

The months that followed the fall of Robespierre in July 1794 mark not only a turning point in the history of the Revolution: 'Thermidor' is also a symbolic moment which came to haunt the subsequent revolutions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By this date the Terror as a system of power was discredited, and the engineers of the Terror were confronting the problem of how to dismantle it without repudiating the aims of the Revolution itself and its work. Professor Baczko analyses the Terror in detail through the political history of the French National Assembly, and looks at the broader issues of the political culture of Revolutionary France. He also uses the problem of the ending of the Terror to highlight contemporary problems in the breakup of the communist system.

good, with some reservations ...

Realizing that there could be many practitioners in the digital fine arts community who likely will strongly object to the title of this book (..."cookbook, recipes," etc.), and noting that the biggest chunk of the book is taken up with the forty-eight picture-making prescriptions without any real insights into why they were selected ..., it does have some things to strongly recommend it. First, it deals comprehensively with one of the least well documented of the creative feature sets within Photoshop: the blending modes. Second, the author manages to encompass a lot of creative options without really using genuine montage (that is, he blends together different versions of the same starting image, without introducing totally different image subjects as separate Photoshop image layers). Third, the author deliberately restricts the use of other tools within the context of the book - for example, only 'Gaussian Blur' and 'Find Edges' are utilized with any regularity from the Photoshop Filters menu. And fourth, he has come up with a neat way of documenting the settings used in the blending undertaken, which simplifies reproducing the procedures. The recipes (yuk!) turn out to be as easy as, well, making different flavors of fudge (yummy!) ...

Despite all these pluses, the book suffers from numerous editing and layout problems. There are typographical mistakes, there are missing page numbers (!), and the format is quite confusing (and is only "saved" in some instances by the fact that there are lots of fairly large example images, so that it's possible to see what was done, without needing to follow the text).

Finally, potential purchasers should know that one of the author's favourite blend modes is 'Hard Mix', which was initially introduced in Photoshop CS, but remains a sort of oddball in the full list of blending modes. (Personally, I've found no good reason to upgrade beyond Photoshop version 7, and would note that there are independent means of simulating, and even exceeding, what 'Hard Mix' is shown to provide in the book.)

Overall, it seems to me that the attributes of the book outweigh its negative points - and that it might be useful to consider as a way of expanding creative image-building options for those with interests in web-based graphics as well as advanced photography and fine art.

Useful Insight

Many end users are aware of the countless features that Adobe has provided within Photoshop. One of the most powerful features that many operators do not use (or forget to use) is the blending features. These can be found within each layer and are essential to the many creative tools found in Photoshop. These tools provide different blending capabilities that can address the creative professional.

This book addresses these needs and is an excellent creative resource to guide users to use these powerful blending features found within Photoshop. This publication is well written and is easy for many beginners to follow, yet it also addresses the needs of the professional seasoned Photoshop user.

There is a great amount of publications about Photoshop ... this is one of the finest I have encountered. The information is valuable and this book is reasonably priced (compared to some that are full of fluff and useless). O'Reilly places valuable information within the reach of the masses that will not require a second mortgage.

This book actually rates 4 1/2 stars. If you have the need, it comes highly recommended.

Great Book

I guess it depends on how you learn. This book has recipes for various looks using Photoshop's Blending Modes. The examples generally include several different kinds of photos. The result is that you get to see what happens to photos of things, people, landscapes, etc. using the same or similar recipes. The author also tells you when he did things a little differently for one or two kinds of photos, and why.

I've seen a lot of this stuff before, but found that I learned a lot from how this book is laid out. It should also make it a lot easier to find, and use, a specific technique for a specific problem.

Because I am a digital scrapbooker, I might find all of this a lot more useful than some other people who use Photoshop. I'm not only manipulating photos when I scrapbook, I am also making and manipulating digital papers and elements. These techniques would be extremely useful for scrapbooking.
