The career of the composer George Butterworth was cruelly cut short by a sniper's bullet at the Somme. His name is kept alive by the popularity of his orchestral tone-poems, such as The Banks of Green Willow and A Shropshire Lad, and his songs. In this book, the first full-length study of Butterworth, Michael Barlow traces his brief life: from preparatory school through Eton and Oxford, a teaching post at Radley, study at the Royal College of Music, a period as a music critic for The Times - and his enlisting in August 1914 which, two years later, led to his heroic death at the Somme. All of Butterworth's surviving compositions are discussed, and important chapters examine his Housman settings and his friendship with Vaughan Williams. Butterworth was also prominent in the folksong revival, and chronicled here for the first time are his extensive activities as a folksong and dance collector. The book also includes some of Butterworth's own writings on music.

'GREAT IN WHAT HE ACHIEVED, GREATER STILL IN WHAT HE PROMISED'.

An exceptionally well-written, thoroughly documented biography covering the complete and unfortunately short life of George Butterworth (1885-1916). All of Butterworth's surviving works are discussed along with an examination of his friendship with Vaughan Williams and the poet Housman from which he derived several of Housman's poems, the most notable of which are the setting of the six songs from The Shropshire Lad. It was this cycle that led me to find out more about Butterworth; it's incredible beauty combined with Housman's very attractive poetry makes the entire package irresistible to the singer, as well as the audience as later proved by the wide popularity of the song cycle. This, combined with the pathos created by the fact that this talented young composer just beginning his career was killed three weeks after he joined the Army by a German sniper along with several others of musical potential. WHAT A DEVISTATING LOSS TO THE MUSIC WORLD. And this "the war to end all wars"!

But the book does not dwell on this aspect, but instead gives us the succinct picture of Butterworth's background, both family and education. The author uses many footnotes, more than I used, but I did check what I considered to be important in the overall picture. I was really not much interested in his heritage, but many no doubt would be interested. It did focus on the three periods, short though they were of his composing life and I learned a great deal by this portion of the book , which also included detailed examples and explanations of his individual compositions.

The Folk Song era for Butterworth was the 2nd compostion period which I found particularly fascinating be cause it spoke of his association with many of other well-known composers interested in the Folk Music Revival; Cecil Sharp (also killed in the war), Vaughan Williams and several others. Since I knew little or nothing about this period in music in England, it made for interesting reading. Included were comments about the relationships and some were quite humorous. One that I will include herein was made by the poet Housman when he discovered that Vaughan Williams had omitted two verses from is musical setting of the song "Is My Team Ploughing?" (This is one of the Shropshire lad Songs in which a ghost is communicating with a live friend- A WONDERFUL SONG). In The V.Williams setting he leaves out the words: The goal stands up, the keeper Stands up to keep the Goal; The composer's view was that any poet who had written such lines as those should be grateful to have them left out, a remark not made directly to Housman, but to a friend; Housman's response was "I wonder how he would like me to cut out two bars of his music." Even the 'greats' can go at it!!!!!!

The book moves forward clearly and at a reasonable pace; it stays with the story and includes many photographs of Butterworth and other involved in his life. If you are a singer, especially a baritone, for that's what the songs were written for, but of course he did write instrumental music as well. The last composing period was when he focused on instrumental writing and before he was killed wrote two significant instrumental pieces, as well as many other musical compositions. All are listed in the book. Everything you want to know about George Butterworth is herein.

He was very much a man of the English countryside, as was Housman whose verses so fired the composer's imagination. ......Butterworth was no innovatory composer, nor was his music very influential, but he will remain an important minor figure with a reputation based on a handful of works, the sincerity and musical value of which assure him a place in the history of English music."

Nice and detailed book on examination

This book has lots of good review and gives detailed instruction on examination techniques. The book starts with health history and then proceeds head to toe and ends with documentation. The writing is easy to read and there are enough illustrations to get the information across. I like the spiral binding so the book can lay flat while open. This is helpful when you are practicing on someone and want the book open for instructions.

I have no idea why the word "rapid" is on the cover. The bulk of the book seems to be more along the lines of thorough yet efficient rather than rapid. There are some places where emphasis is place on speed.

A great easy to understand and implement book. Great exercises to get started with also.

I read it in one day. The first book I have found that actually explains the "feelings" that you get. What sensations you might feel, what is to be expected while you are learning. I took pages of notes for fast reference. I did some of the exercises and plan to do more. I am not a medium, I have not been "aware" since I was very young. I am very intuitive and want to be able to serve. I think this book is an excellent stepping stone for Light Workers. I feel that in time and doing the exercises in the book, I will be able to connect with Spirit and feel more presence. I don't know that I am a "Medium" or ever will be, but this book is the perfect thing to be able to make that next step on the path.
I just loved it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to start their journey or to continue one already started. It is written so that anyone can understand it and connect with it. I am grateful for the opportunity to read it.

Spirit is always there and willing and excited to talk to loved ones. We've had many incidents of closure and forgiveness asked and given through the years. Easy Reading and Learning

This book couldn't be any more user friendly. Even tho I have a background in psychic readings and 3 years of classwork in these areas, it feels good to go further with a new author (to me, anyway). You validate and add to what I have learned and worked on in my studies. You suggest a very gentle way of connecting with spirit, a progressive way that I can practice in my quiet hours. I did this in reverse order tho. I found this book first and the remedial one second. I don't care really because it's all great, easily absorbed information. I just have one question. When you are talking to spirit and asking questions for the readee, do you ask quietly in your head and just give the answers as they come forward, or do you ask spirit questions out loud so the readee can hear what you are asking? Thanks, Emily for these books which are filled with suggestions for success. The reader can pick and choose which info they feel comfortable working with. Great information to go with how I work now. This book, the first in a trilogy, is a great collection of stories, thoughts, penses and ideas. It is a book in the great Jewish wisdom tradition. Jacob is a baker, and each day on his way to the bakery after his prayers he thinks and reflects on God and life. While the ovens are warming up, he jots down his thoughts. One day by accident, one of his scraps of thoughts gets baked into a loaf of bread. The lady who finds it is overwhelmed by its insight and wisdom. She asked the owner of the bakery if Jacob will share more of his ideas by baking one in each of some rolls for a dinner party for her. Reluctantly, Jacob agrees and his peaceful life is shattered.

Soon Jacob has no time for himself. When he goes home people are awaiting him, in the morning they are on the path to work, and every day they are in the bakery, asking him questions, seeking advice and wisdom. They soon desire to make Jacob their Tzadik, their wise man. These stories will warm your heart, and open your eyes to the divine in yourself and in others. It will teach you to live with love and grace and mercy towards others.

This little poetic story lead us to a place where we can have perfect peace of mind. The reason why Human Being are Human Being is we can better utilize our thinking power.
Jacob is a humble yet great influencer.
Each of the little stories inside the book sounds or looks very simple, but there are always great thoughts behind.

Great Book If You Need Help With Your Homework!

This book helped me with my homework. It has all of the answers to the odd homework problems that are given from Introductory Statistics by Prem S. Mann sixth edition. This book includes the step by step way to solve the problems to each odd question. It helps when you have no idea how to work a problem, and you do not have anyone to ask for help. This book was passed around my statistics class. People were so addicted to it that I stopped bringing it to class. It will really help you if you use it as a reference for when you are stuck, not for copying every homework assignment. The college actually banned it from the bookstore.

After producing seminal exhibitions and publications as curator at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, in the 1960s, he founded the Visual Studies Workshop, an independent arts organization where his innovative programs trained a new generation of photographers, critics, curators, and historians. Nathan Lyons: Selected Essays, Lectures, and Interviews provides the first comprehensive overview of Lyons’s career as one of the most important voices in American photography.

Of primary importance in this volume are Lyons’s own writings, gathered here for the first time. These include essays and articles formulated while Lyons was a young curator, as well as early statements about his own artistic practice and his emerging philosophy of photographic education. Important unpublished lectures are presented here, most significantly “Photography and the Picture Experience,” Lyons’s groundbreaking lecture on the snapshot, and “Sequential Considerations,” addressing photographic sequence and visual books. Lyons’s recent projects bring this volume up to the present.

Contributions from other scholars include essays by James Borcoman, Joel Eisinger, Vicki Goldberg, Keith Smith, Anne Wilkes Tucker, and Adam D. Weinberg. Also featured are interviews with Lyons by Maria Antonella Pelizzari, Thomas Dugan, Bob Rogers, and Robert Hirsch, and a newly translated interview by Joan Fontcuberta. Two selections in this volume are drawn from rare unpublished audio recordings made by Lyons in the 1960s: the first, a 1965 interview with Paul Strand on the subject of photographic books, and the second, an extensive discussion with photographers Simpson Kalisher and Garry Winogrand recorded in 1966.

The book to help you handle Linux system admin duties with aplomb

This book is borne out of the author's own experiences over the years solving day to day problems in his work. That should give anyone confidence that the examples in this book are as real-world as they can be. Veterans from the DOS days will fondly remember creating batch files to accomplish a myriad of tasks. If you are one of them and switched to an OS like Unix or Linux, this is the book to get. Everything from file permissions, process management, task scheduling, text processing to interactive shell scripting is covered here. Want to backup a folder in the middle of the night and want its status emailed to you? Check. Have a complex operation in mind involving loops, file handling, arrays, functions and message dialogs? The author arms you with the necessary information to achieve that. The final chapters take the readers through understanding the Linux startup process and customizing the system environment as well as using regular expressions for complex pattern matching. Apart from networking, this book is all you need to handle common Linux system admin duties.

For sure is not the only book about shell scripting (books on this topic have started since '70 years), but it's really good and with a step by step approach.
You start learning some common Unix commands (included some Unix/Linux concepts), the job control, the text filtering features.
With all this basis you start build some scripts using variables, flows, conditions.
Several tricks are included and also several examples.Finally it's included also a part to build text based window interface with dialog.
Considering that shell scripting is still used (also if languages like Perl, Ptyton, Ruby can totally replace them), this book is really useful for Linux/Unix system administrator and people that need to learn on how programming with shell script language.

Absolute must read for anyone needing encouragement to pursue a dream, a goal, etc.

I first read this book in 1987 and it turned my life around. It gave me an awareness of who God made me to be and what He made me capable of achieving. Second to my Bible, I have never read such eye-opening, encouraging truths. Mr. Lewis relates to his reader's through his use of real-life stories that are both, fascinating and motivational. I loaned my copy to someone several years ago and never got it back and I have missed having it to refer to or loan to other's who need what I needed so many years ago, so I bought another one.

This book is amazing. It has helped me so much! I will honestly say, this is the best motivational book out there, if not one of the best books I've ever read. My father had this book in his study...curious to what it was, I picked it up and read it. I had no idea that that one little book of 203 pages, would change my life so much. I'm one of those people that felt like their life was a mess and that there was no hope...after reading this book I felt worthy to have my dreams come true. It talks about how important goal setting is (and shows you how to set them), and that alone has made me more successful and motivated in my life. It talks about self-motivation and self-talk...fascinating details about human behavior. As a 17-year old female...I must say this book is a must-read for all ages! I absolutely love this book! It will change your life and perspective of every complication that may come your way, and if you don't already love yourself...this book will show you how.

Una historia que no te puedes perder!!

Primero quiero decir que la autora tiene la capacidad de sorprender a sus lectores, tiene una manera de llevar las historias que nos mantiene enganchados de principio a fin. Y en esta novela también me sucedió eso. La historia esta narrada de una forma tan natural y tan fresca que empatiza de inmediato con el lector. Sarah es una protagonista que se deja ver tal cual como es, con sus miedos, anhelos y emociones . No le gusta el dia de los enamorados pero justo un dia como esos su vida da un giro y entonces tendrá que empezar a jugar a descubrir el significado de las flores.
Blake es el hombre hermoso que todas quisiéramos encontrar alguna vez por el camino, pero no todo es perfecto, tendrás que jugar el juego tu también para descubrir lo que les espera.
A pesar de ser una novela romántica tiene momentos reales y cotidianos y en ningún momento derrama miel. La intensidad de sentimientos de los protagonistas logran traspasar las páginas para contagiarte de mucho amor, pasión desmedida , inseguridades , miedos y anhelos.
Definitivamente recomiendo mucho esta novela, el único problema es quedé tan enganchada, que al leer la palabra fin me quede con ganas de más Sarah y más Blake.

Ante todo, quiero agradecerle a Brianne Miller que me facilitara una copia del libro para que lo leyera a cambio de que diera mi honesta opinión sobre el mismo.
Brianne ha madurado muchísimo respecto a sus primeras obras. Sus personajes han ganado espesor y profundidad, la trama ha ganado en complejidad y su lenguaje se ha hecho más cuidado.
No voy a revelar nada en absoluto de la trama de esta novela, porque hay que leerla, sino que me voy a centrar en algo que me interesa mucho: la evolución de su autora. Brianne ya ha dejado atrás – y ojo, en muy, pero que muy pocos meses – a la escritora novel de la dulce historia de amor de "La cara oculta del destino" y de la inusitada e ingenua novela de vampiros – tengo que confesar mi debilidad por los vampiros – de "El eco de la esperanza". En "Ángel... empieza el juego" nos encontramos con una Brianne más dura y curtida en las lides del escribir, pero no por ello menos romántica. Esta mujer avanza con pie firme y seguro... y acelerado. No os perdáis esta novela por nada del mundo, ni las que a buen seguro le van a seguir, porque hay Brianne para rato y va a dar mucho que hablar.
