EXCELLENT BOOK!
By Becky Payne
This book is well written and reveals very interesting aspects of police work. I am a civilian with the MPD and know alot of the people mentioned in the book. Mr. Smith's account of life on the streets opened my eyes to the types of people and situations police officers come across on a daily basis. To me, it is more interesting because of the fact that I know or am familiar with alot of the names that weren't changed. But even someone who doesn't know the people mentioned would enjoy the short stories and reflections. A highly recommended read!

Inspiring and compelling
By Heather
The stories in this book give such an inspiring insight into police work that we don't normally see. The author takes us with him from the earliest days of his career through some of his funniest, scariest, and most surprising experiences, and I felt as if I were right there with him. I was able to laugh, gasp, cringe, and occasionally wipe away a tear with each episode, and my view of police officers and how they do their job has changed completely. The stories were well-written, descriptive, and compelling, and the theme of the author's faith in God allowed me to see every adventure through the eyes of a young man keeping his faith as it is tested each day. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in police work or who needs a fresh perspective on how men and women in uniform deal with the very real drama they must encounter when they answer a call for help.

Atlas of the Human Brain, Third Edition, by Juergen K. Mai, George Paxinos, Thomas Voss

High-resolution human imaging requires a high-resolution atlas. There is no atlas that approaches the accuracy and comprehensiveness of The Atlas of the Human Brain.
This is the third, thoroughly revised, edition of the very successful atlas that received the Award of Excellence from the American Association of Publishers. Constructed by the recognized leaders in brain cartography, the atlas provides the most detailed and accurate delineations of brain structure available. It is intended as an atlas for day-to-day use in the research laboratory to identify macroscopic and microscopic structures in the human brain as collected in research data with a variety of methods. It will also be particularly useful for the interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging data. The atlas includes a DVD with not only the atlas in electronic format, providing electronic versions of drawings and photographs to facilitate use of atlas contents with researchers' own material, but also 3D visualisation software that allows easy browsing of the images, and a feature to allow direct retrieval of brain areas using coordinates obtained in magnetic resonance imaging.

* Brain structures are presented in the standard Talairach and Tournoux stereotaxic space
* DVD contains MRI-Navigator (3D visualization of MR images), BrainNavigator (3D navigation through the detailed coronal atlas in PART 2) allowing the neuroimaging community to dial in the coordinates of their activation focus and find out what area of the brain the activation occurs in
* Significantly larger trim size (14 x 11 inches) providing much higher detail in the print graphics and photographs

one of two atlases you need
By Anthony Steven Dick
This is the premiere brain atlas--I cannot stress enough how good it is. I would say the only negative of this atlas is that it is almost too detailed, and might be a bit overwhelming for a beginner. For example, it labels subareas of structures that might be labeled as single structures in other atlases (e.g., claustrum, amygdala etc.). I don't mean to present this as a criticism--the atlas fills the role of a comprehensive atlas for intermediate to advanced users, but beginners might want to use this in combination with another atlas (I recommend The Brain Atlas: A Visual Guide to the Human Central Nervous System in the paperback). This latter book is nice for the illustrated pathways as well. I was a big fan of the last edition of the Mai et al book, and I think the current edition is even better. For example, there is a supplemental website containing a large amount of great information: [...]. Used in combination with another book, this atlas will give any medical or neuroscience student a solid foundation in anatomy.

Great coronal brain atlas
By ODON
This is a great atlas of human brain. The histological images and drawings for coronal sections are superb. The attachment of digital version is useful for many purposes.

However, there are some aspects which I felt rather disappointed of.

1. It only contain low quality, small images and drawings for horizontal and sagittal planes.
2. It does not cover the lower brain stem!

Almost a superb oeuvre
By Nevair Roberti Gallani
It is a superb book/CD, but a little less than expectations. The cartesian space is not of Shaltenbrand's with the MCP as its origin, used worldwide in clinical settings, but of the Talairach's, whose center is at the AC instead.

"It's not that I'm against religion, I simply don't have one (nor do I believe that we need it to be ethical). My faith is doctrine-free, with a definition of God that doesn't conjure a white man in the sky who dispenses blessings for good behavior and harsh judgments to condemn the bad. That's because I don't believe God does that; religion does. You see, faith is a spiritual practice of continually letting go of certainty, of ego, and of the underlying need to know, while religion is a ceremonial tradition of hanging on, clinging to concrete dogmas, stubborn rigidity, and ageless rituals."

LIFE 101
By katashby
It would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a book with as much insight and information in 23 easy chapters, as Timber manages in Faithfully Religionless. Perfect for the new student of 'awakened living', as well as those who began their path years ago. It's Life 101. Personally, I don't think there's a soul on the planet who couldn't benefit from this book. Not only great content, but the narration is as close to perfect as you can get, as well. Hawkeye speaks with such ease, that I found myself feeling that I could have been listening to my own son during one of our lengthy conversations. AND he quotes both Rumi and Kurt Cobain!?!? We definitely speak the same language. Well done, Timber, well done.

THE ONLY BIBLE I NEED
By Viga Boland, author No Tears for my Father
I read “Faithfully Religionless” in two nights…at bedtime…when for me, most books are a sedative. But Timber Hawkeye’s second book was no sedative! I had to force myself to put it down and it wouldn’t leave me alone during the day either. I couldn’t wait to get back to it. But then, when it came time to review it, I didn’t know where to start. What approach would do it justice? How could I express how profoundly this memoir…it is a memoir…moved me? I wanted to sit down and discuss Timber’s book with him, not review it. And yet, I had to tell others how and why “Faithfully Religionless” had clarified my own thoughts on organized religion, faith, and above all, God. So forgive me if this is more than just a book review.

I turn 70 in 6 days. For the past 57 years, I have turned my back on all organized religion. As for faith and God, I’ve had no use for either since I was 11 when my biological father began sexually abusing me. When my prayers for deliverance from that life went unanswered, everything I’d been taught in the Catholic schools I attended seemed ludicrous. I rejected all of it and concluded the only one who could save me was me. At 24, when I finally got out of that abusive situation, with the love of a good husband I somehow found the strength inside myself to heal myself, and 5 years ago I finally told all in my memoir of sexual abuse.

What has all this got to do with Timber Hawkeye’s wonderful book, “Faithfully Religionless”? Everything. As I now prepare to speak at an upcoming conference on sexual violence, I can finally tell the delegates how I healed myself without therapy and without “finding religion and God” as so many do. Timber Hawkeye’s book told me what I had done…even though I didn’t know it! I had realized and accepted that I would never get an apology from my father, so I had “let go” as Timber says. I had accepted that those who hurt me had themselves been hurt and were not to be judged, but helped. I had recognized how the “emotions” I packed around my feelings continued to hurt me and distort both the facts and the memories of events, and that my efforts to explain the inexplicable…why my father had chosen to abuse me…were in vain. All those efforts had done was keep me chained to a past I couldn’t change.

I could write pages and pages on what resonated with me so profoundly in “Faithfully Religionless”. Indeed, after I finished reading, I went back through the book three more times making copious notes of what I want to share at that conference. So many people live by the traditional bible. I have no use for it. But Timber’s book has become my bible. No convoluted sentences; no worn out repetition of what’s been thumped into our heads since we were kids and which we just accept on blind faith and because our parents and elders told us it’s so. Just simple, down to earth suggestions for how to live our lives in peace with ourselves and others.

But I can’t leave this without addressing why I wanted to read this book so much. It has to do with that rejection of organized religion and God that I mentioned above. Over the years, I’ve grown so weary of people telling me I need Jesus, that I need to believe, have faith, love God. I reached hungrily for “Faithfully Religionless” as soon as it was available. Would it absolve me from feeling ashamed, even weird for being fed up with the overkill of organized religion? Was it possible others also didn’t embrace the idea of God as some white-robed man in the heavens who laid out my life’s path for me and would miraculously step in and help me when I found the path blocked with boulders?

Through his simple, honest words, Timber Hawkeye reassured me I wasn’t alone in my confusion about religion. He went further: he clarified why I felt that way. But most importantly, in his explanation of how he sees God, I realized Timber and I were on the same page and that I’d never lost God at all 57 years ago. Why? Because as Timber writes “God resides within each of us, and [that] when we serve others, give, forgive, accept, allow, zoom out, let go, and treat others with kindness, generosity, gratitude, compassion and empathy, we are acting out of the God-ness in our hearts, the goodness within, which feels like heaven right here on earth.”

To that, I say, “Amen” and thank you Timber Hawkeye. Everyone needs to read “Faithfully Religionless”.

The power of letting go!
By Philip and Melissa Knight-Fitzgerald
The greatest gift you can give yourself is letting go of the things that hold you back.
The wisdom and insight found inside Faithfully Religionless is powerful yet simple enough to embrace. The whole book feels as if Timber Hawkeye is speaking to you as a mentor and as a friend. After reading it I realized that I need to let go and there are many things I need to unlearn.
The flow of this book makes it a quick read if you have a day to enjoy it. Though it is one you'll be want to read over and over again savoring it. Each time you will still learn something new

How To Walk Across America (And Not Be an A**hole), by Tyler Coulson

How to Walk Across America is the survival guide for the crazy, courageous few who want (or need) to chuck it all and walk from ocean to ocean. No nonsense. No marketing. Just lessons from the road, from people who have actually walked across America. This is the ultimate primer on mega-long distance hiking, practical advice to keep feet from failing, sanity from disintegrating, and bank accounts from disappearing, no matter how long the hike.

Attorney, adventurer, and author Tyler Coulson walked across America in 2011 with his dog, Mabel. Contributor Nate Damm did it in 2011, and contributors John and Kait Seyal did it in 2012, with three therapy dogs.

Coulson shares lessons that you can only learn on the road, from common sense to highway secrets. He writes with candor and humor, stripping away all the marketing and glamour of high-tech, high-dollar hiking. What’s left is the ultimate first-level guide to the practice of chucking it all and walking out. It pulls no punches: it will scare you, inspire you, and leave you laughing.

funny, a bit frightening, and completely free of bull****
By Ronny Kerr
for many years, i've dreamed of walking across the country. i think most people enjoy fantasizing about leaving their ordinary lives to do something completely radical and unexpected... just because.

if your specific version of that fantasy has involved walking across America--and you're relatively serious about making that fantasy a reality--this is the book for you.

1. it won't take many pages of reading this book for you to fall from the stars to realize the blunt truth of what this kind of journey would be like. it's not a pretty walk in the park, it's not as easy as going camping for a weekend, and it really really isn't for everyone. but if you keep reading... you might have a chance.

2. it's practical as hell. your idea of camping is buying a 3-day pass to Coachella... or you might be getting back from carving new paths through the Amazon: in either case, you're going to learn some very important practical things about a journey like this. Tyler's actually done it and that comes across. lots of little tips and big ideas in here.

3. Tyler's a great writer. that's that. i picked this book up after finishing some Oscar Wilde and then when i finished, i picked up "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (funny coincident, right?). the point is... i enjoy quality writing, and Tyler delivers. it's not just good, it can sometimes be hilarious. some of his stories had me laughing out loud--an accomplishment for any writer!

basically, i would recommend this book in an instant to everyone from the serious walker to the casual daydreamer.

Informative and witty
By Donna
I'm planning my own walk across country this April, and a friend told me I should pick this book up...it was truly informative weather your looking to make your own journey or just dreaming about it. I picked up many useful tips and ideas that hadn't occurred to me prior to reading it. Besides being helpful, the author made it fun with his unique style of writing which more times than not, I found myself laughing out loud....not another dry read here about one persons vacation...
A must read for anyone looking to talk a 'little' walk.

Good entertainment value
By bnb
I bought the kindle version and read it in one sitting. I'd recommend this for entertainment value rather than as a serious guide to walking across the U.S. The book is a good starting point if you think you might want to try this little adventure. As much as I'd like to walk across the US this is probably as close to doing it as I will get. I like the author's quote in a NY Times article: “Almost everyone who does this has some sort of generalized unhappiness with themselves and the world”. It fits.
