Much like Mao's Great Leap Forward (complete with a bedridden gangster leader and illegal "covetous" thoughts), people suffer while the government knowingly feeds off their misery. The message lacks subtlety: absolute power corrupts absolutely. This maxim is illustrated by the Council wittingly allowing people to die of the zombielike illness because the cure requires the rebuilding of the machine that once held them captive to corporations. The Council will destroy themselves if need be; they refuse to return to the old ways. Yet Syd and Liam are willing to fight to the death. Well, Mr London, you've got me beggin' you for more.

This is the second book in a series, and we are all familiar with the posible disappointment a second book can be compared with the first one. I loved Proxy and was so happy when I found out the second book had already come out. These books are special in my opinion because they are for a young audience (I'd say age 14 and up, perfect for those who are tired of the "safe" Percy Jackson stories and want some more blood and daring/realistic language) and the lead protagonist is dark skinned and gay! There's almost always a character that is gay, but it's never the lead character, still these books aren't at all about being gay or anything, it's just that the lead person is gay and I think that's really cool.
I enjoyed the first book a lot and was kinda nervous about the second book, scared of what would happen, would it be as good as the first one or would I be totally disappointed? Some new characters came into the book pretty early and that also made me nervous. But ... it didn't take long before I was in love once again! One of the main characters in Guardian is a seventeen year old guy named Liam who's got a metal hand! How cool is that? I already loved Syd, never liked Marie much, though it got better in this book, I worshipped Knox, and I quickly fell for Liam too (pluss his physical description looks exactly like my brothers not that you should care).
Guardian is full-packed action from chapter 4 and out. There's blood and tears and fear and love and humour.
This is one of those rare books you can say did not disappoint at all. I thought it was nearly as good as the first one and I enjoyed it to the end. Now I'm biting my fingernails waiting for the third one. Hurry up, Alex London! I need the third one! Dear reader, just pick up Guardian, okay? Good boy/girl *patting head*
Oh, and BTW if you're looking for something similar to Proxy and Guardian, try Red Rising by Pirece Brown, or the Legend series by Marie Lu. Have a nice life and happy new year! God bless

Personally I Loved It

So you know how these days a lot of the time you read the first book in a series/trilogy/duology and it's completely awesome and it pulls you in and consumes you and you spend a year obsessively stalking the Internet for every little scrap of info as you patiently(ha) wait for the sequel to FINALLY come out and then a lot of the time it's kind of a disappointment? It's not that it's bad but it's just not quite as good? It's as if the author lost momentum some where? Well not with this book! It is at least as good as the first and, in my opinion, definitely not a disappointment.
Now I don't want to give away any spoilers or anything for Proxy and honestly I don't want to sit here and write out a long detailed review of why this book is awesome and why you should read it and all the things so I'll just talk about some of my favorite things and then you can read the book, okay?

A Few Of My Favorite Things -
-Liam - He's no Knox but he is awesome. I wouldn't say that I liked him as much as I liked Knox but it was pretty damn close. He's just a really complex character and yeah I loved him.
-Syd - Okay Syd had some down moments in this book but that didn't make me love him any less, maybe it even made me love him a little more. He was still himself, sure he was changed and sad and slightly depressed but in the end he didn't let that stop him.
-The plot - I didn't really know how this book as going to go because honestly when I read Proxy I thought it was a stand alone and I was kinda apprehensive about this but it was awesome. It made total sense and it just added so much to the story. Basically I loved it, are you seeing a pattern here? I am.
- Twisty - I feel like there were some very interesting twists in this book and I loves me a good twist.
And now I think I am running out of things to say and my brain doesn't feel like cooperating and yeah.

A disappointing sequel

First I would like to say that I adored reading Proxy, the first book in the series. It was the first LGBT book that I've ever read and I had never read anything quite like it before. A world where good standing citizens "patrons" has designated poor folk "proxies" to take their punishment when they broke the law. Interesting right?

I did like the introduction of the new character, Liam. He seemed like a pretty decent guy and made an interesting addition to the story. He was entirely devoted to keeping Syd safe. But it never really went into depth and explained why he was so willing to protect Syd in the first place, besides the obvious crush he had on him. Something else that I did like about this story was how Syd was willing to stick up for the Guardians (who developed a sickness resulting from the Machine being shut down) when no one else was willing to help them. He saw the humanity still in them that no one was willing to take a second glance at.

Something about this book that I did not like, was that the world building felt incomplete, as well as the characters. This story was more about a revolution that happens during a revolution and veered off track from what I thought was an interesting enough storyline. As hard as I tried, I could not feel that "magic" that I had felt before.

I was extremely excited to read this sequel, unfortunately for me the Guardian did not live up to the expectations that I held after reading Proxy. I found that the world building as well as the character development fell short in this story, and the plot became questionable. There were still a few exciting moments in this book, but I have to say it's one that wasn't really for me. I don't know if I will be continuing on with the series are not

I give this a 2 out of 5 stars.

Even more fantastic dragons!

As in her previous book, she provides a plethora of easy to follow step-by-step instructions with her inspiring art. This is an amazing book for anyone who loves dragon-inspired art, or wants to create their own dragon artwork.

The sections in the Introduction were repeated from the first DragonArt book, with the exception of Color And Pattern Considerations. In contrast, Part 1 is much elaborated and detailed than similar sections in the before mentioned book. However, Part 2 is the best part of this book, with page after page full of tutorials about drawing dragons. Here you will learn how to draw all sort of dragons, showing dragon heads from front, side and 3/4 view, and full dragon views. I also found the Dragon Scene section to be interesting albeit short, providing an overview on how the scenes found in this book were painted digitally.

There should be plenty of dragons for every one in this book. However, 144 pages were not enough for me, but that is because I can never get enough from J. Peffer's artwork.

Evolution - better than the last two

I grabbed this book mostly because of a desire to have some of the art available for browsing on my shelf, and not so much because I needed help drawing. As someone who's been comfortable with the way I draw my own dragons for some time, let me say that this book can still be just as enjoyable and helpful for new dragon artists as it is for those of you who've been drawing for a little while. It is packed with things like choosing color combos and patterns, variations on limbs, physical features such as horns, drawing baby dragons - things that could even be applied to other fantasy creatures, in some cases. I will agree with what has already been said, and that is that this book doesn't cover just one type of dragon. You will find options to consider for western dragons, eastern dragons ... heck, even a little bit of the undead.

Perhaps one of my favorite parts to this book is the last few pages. The artist has inserted a brief section on how she creates and colors her art digitally. This was particularly interesting for me to see, since observing another artist's methods is always fun.

Over all, I would say that this book is geared more toward the new/intermediate artist. However, that doesn't mean that as an accomplished professional, you have to rule it out :)

My 12 year old daughter LOVES this book. I really explains clearly how to draw a dragon and there is a lot of humor and interesting information about dragons included.

The story of "Venice Preserved" is portly founded upon St. Real's History of the Conspiracy of the Spaniards against the Republic of Venice, in 1618. Voltaire compares the author of this History to Sallust; and pronounces it superior to the English tragedy - an assertion, which, like many others from the same source, was the convenient sentence of an adroit but reckless ignorance. The merits of St. Real are undoubted}" great; but Otway's indebtedness to him is exceedingly slight; and it is remarkable to see how ingeniously, from a few meagre historical details, the great dramatist has constructed one of the noblest imaginative works of which literature can boast. The names of nearly all the dramatis personae, with the exception of Belvidera, are taken from St. Real; but their characters are Otway's, and his plot is almost wholly original. The true Pierre was a Norman corsair, who had accumulated a fortune by plundering ship? in the Mediterranean. He was eventually strangled on board his own ship by order of the Venetian Senate. Jaffier was of Provence, and appears to have engaged in the plot against the state from his friendship for Pierre, and the prospect of gain. History says nothing of his wrongs, or his love for the daughter of PriuLi; and he was shaken in his faith to the conspiracy, not by the tears of a woman, but partly by his detestation of the sanguinary speech of Renault (in which Otway follows the history), and partly from being struck with compunction daring the spectacle of the Doge's wedding the Adriatic, when his imagination contrasted the public rejoicings with the desolation which was to follow.

Restoration Drama

The period of English theater that coincided with the restoration of the crown is best known for comedy. This is with good reason. The comedies of Wycherly, Congreve, Etherege, Davenant, etc. still retain their satirical bite and energy, whereas the drama of the period, especially the attempts at tragedy, appear now dated and lugubrious.
Otway, like Dryden, is something of an exception. Though not adhering to the Aristotean rules of tragedy that Dryden practiced, Otway shows in Venice Preserved a great deal of dramatic skill and competence. The plot elements may seem a bit contrived, particularly in comparison to the Greek model, but the dialogue doesn't sink into the sort of heroic, declamatory mode that characterizes so many plays of the period and that sound so laughable to a modern audience. The play was well received in its time, as was his other famous work, The Orphan. Unfortunately for Otway, playwights were not often well compensated in that era, and he like Savage, lived a life of penury.
Venice Preserved is still well regarded enough that it is still taught in many college courses that cover Restoratiion theater. Though modern productions are extremely rare, is is a work that retains power and its pathos.

About the Author
Kathy Heilenman held a joint appointment in French and Italian and Foreign and English as a Second Language Education at the University of Iowa. She was co-director of the Foreign Language Acquisition, Research, and Education Program, which houses a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition.

Isabelle Kaplan recently retired from the Isabelle Kaplan Center for Languages and Cultures at Bennington College, VT. She was the Vermont President of the AATF Chapter, a member of the Executive Board of the VFLA, and a Project Director for ACTFL. She remains an active member in the foreign language community, consulting for ACTFL, the Department of Defense, and several colleges and universities. She is also an oral proficiency tester and trainer.

Claude Toussaint Tournier is College Lecturer Emerita of French and Italian at Northwestern University. He previously served as first-year French program coordinator and teaching assistant supervisor at Northwestern University.

the book came unwrapped and without a product key for the iLrn program. Now I have to return it right as I was about to use it for homework. It's useless to me as my online course requires the iLrn suite which this one advertises but did not come with.... I hope I can replace it with one with the code in time. =/

About the Author
Barbara H. Estridge is a retired instructor of medical technology and research associate in the College of Science & Mathematics at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Her experience includes working at the hospital bench, teaching clinical laboratory courses, biological and biomedical research, clinical laboratory management, and more.

Anna P. Reynolds is a retired instructor of medical technology and a research coordinator at the College of Agriculture at Auburn University. She taught both hospital and university Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician, and Medical Laboratory Assistant programs. Her experience includes clinical and research experience in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, parasitology, and immunology.

Basic Medical Laboratory Techniques: Excellent & Sinmple

I found this book an excellent and easy to follow book. Very well illustrated and to the point. I benefitted from it in preparing my lectures for a Medical Laboratory course.

ILOOOOOOOOVE this book! Its amazing and super easy to follow, to the point, goes into detail with out way to much overshelming detail. Has labs at end of each chapter! Is an intro to all areas of working in a lab, Why cant all my books be so awesome! I wish my current instructor could use something like this! WONDERFUL!!! :O) I can say more only I am sure you have the idea! :O) PS I LOVE THIS BOOK! :O)

A great resource

This is one of the best New Critical Idiom titles: well-organized, clearly written, balanced and thoughtful, both comprehensive and comprehensible. If you need an introduction to the field of ecocriticism, this is the best place to start.

Contrary to what the previous reviewer claims, the book has well-informed discussions of both Christianity (in a chapter on Apocalypse, where he contrasts millenialist visions of the end of the world with Augustine's "comic" (i.e. unpredictable) eschatology) and of various eco-feminist and deep-ecological ideas of the Great Mother. Garrard is a generous reader, but does not hesitate to point out excesses and contradictions. His distinction between "problems in ecology" (which call for scientific analysis) and "ecological problems" (requiring social and cultural understanding) is worth the price of the book.

A Handy Guide to to the Field of Ecocriticism

To write a book that claims to give an account of a field and its terminology is inevitably to expose oneself to criticism. Why does Garrard write about this and not that? Does this particular argument really deserve the airtime it gets? I imagine we could go on like this forever, because the boundaries of ecocriticism are often contested, and some people who could be said to do ecocriticism don't call themselves ecocritics. There were some things about this book that I wish were different based on my own particular viewpoints.

But to evaluate this book fairly we have to evaluate it sympathetically, and to do that it is worth reminding ourselves of what this book is. Garrard's book should be seen as a kind of gateway to ecocriticism, and it is a very good one. Garrard provides thorough glosses of the concepts and problems that drive ecocriticism, sketches out the various positions that might fall under the ecocriticism label, and gives a detailed account of the thought that forms ecocriticism's theoretical underpinnings.

I have the second edition, which covers the major developments in the field over the course of the 2000s, and so Garrard's book is more useful for a scholar finding his or her way into the field than, say, The Ecocriticism Reader: Landmarks in Literary Ecology which, given that its role was to get a scholarly conversation started, is now somewhat dated.

Because this book is mostly about giving a gloss to a body of scholarship, it is not eminently citable if one is actually doing research. I would also only make it optional in a classroom, as a seminar discussion would be better spent on an actual literary or theoretical text than a gloss. The literary analyses model point to ways of doing ecocritical inquiry into different genres, but they can also be hard to evaluate and may be of little interest if you don't know the texts. My biggest criticism is that some of the analyses remain underdeveloped in this new edition, and I wish that there were more of a dissection of some ecocritical commonplaces that we really ought to have dispensed with by now..

What is most valuable about this book is that it points the way to a genuinely critical mode of ecocriticism, as opposed to art appreciation or commentary, or worse, what has been called "the praise song school of ecocriticism." Appreciation and commentary are a necessary phase of starting a conversation, but doing that kind of scholarship forever is rather pointless. If you are a beginner broaching the field of ecocriticism, you can save yourself some time by starting with this book. And if you are more familiar with the territory, this book is still worth having in reach, if only because it is useful in pointing out possible directions through the kinds of conceptual problems one bumps into when undertaking ecocritical scholarship, however one wishes to define that term.

This book can't be everything to everybody interested in ecocriticism, but that's probably a good thing for ecocriticism. The fact that ecocriticism can't be reduced to a two hundred page volume is surely indicative that there is enough heterogeneity to sustain it as a viable mode of critical inquiry.

Interesting viewpoints

This was a required text for a class I am taking on "The Ecological Chaucer," and at first I was very skeptical. I'm not claiming to be any type of expert, but the ideas in this book are engaging and timely for our Green-movement-obsessed generation. The application of this critique to other texts, especially classical texts, has been very informative and allows a new engagement with authors about whom much is already written.
