In this, her third and least-known book, first published in 1980, Jane Jacobs examines not only the particular question of Quebec and Canada, but also the larger issue of sovereignty and autonomy in general. Using Norway as a model, Jacobs details that country's campaign of peaceful persistence that led to breaking ties with Sweden—and suggests that Canada and Canadians should be inspired by the example. An essential component of Jacobs's urban activism, this new edition of the book incorporates and expands the 1979 Massey Lectures, Canadian Cities and Sovereignty-Association, commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Also included is a previously unpublished exclusive interview with Jane Jacobs in her Toronto home in 2005, 25 years after the book appeared and 10 years after the 1995 Quebec referendum. In these musings, she reasserts and updates her thoughts on Separatism—and addresses new issues such as tar sand development in Alberta, the finance of gambling, and the future of the Euro and of Europe.

A Great Read That Deserves More Reviews.

Question of Separatism had been out-of-print for 30 years, I have no idea why. If "Economy of Cities" or "Cities and the Wealth of Nations" was your cup-o-tea then this one is right in the same league as those two. Here is Jane Jacobs at the height of her literary powers and making bold statements. In it, she argues that the Canadian province of Quebec and the rest of Canada may both come to benefit should Quebec attain sovereign statehood. Cute, right?
It is said that this is her least popular book, which probably accounts for it being out of print while all others that came before and after have remained in print, and have been subject to analysis for nearly half a century. The reason *may* be that the idea of Quebec Statehood is a highly unpopular, and somewhat taboo amongst Canadians, even to this day. I don't think I've ever even read or watched any report on the news about it (I guess the U.S has it's own southern, separatist sentiment to deal with). Either way, I found it to be a very fluid, lucid, easy, and, most importantly, informative read. It avoids the familiar traps of cheap sentimentality; Instead, Jacobs uses Quebec's struggle for sovereignty not as a war-cry, but as a chain of events that perhaps may have been inevitable. That the issue of separatism is one most nations must deal with at one point or another (the civil war here in the U.S, or Norway's Separation from Sweden which is discussed in the book).
I also noticed that her arguments in this book fit in perfectly with those of "Cities and the Wealth of Nations" ,which came afterwards, and is another book I find highly important. So overall, An excellent read. And like most of her writings, still highly relevant.
