Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He’s not lovable, or even likable. He’s an overbearing idealist, a Radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged—or spare his life.
A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the Radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other’s deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas’s politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.

A note of caution for the Silas lovers!
By zorana
At the outset I'd like to say that I think KJ Charles is a great writer and I hesitated to leave a kind of negative review of this book because I generally love her stuff and think it is really well thought out in terms of plot, world building and character. Having said that since I'm still broken up (after months!) about the resolution of this particular story I thought I'd leave a heads up for anyone coming into the story from a similar perspective. That is, as a reader heavily invested in Silas and his revolutionary ideals. I'd have appreciated knowing this going in so I hope it will also be helpful to someone else!
On the level of individual story arcs I was very happy with how Dom and Silas negotiated their relationship and loved how they changed as individuals due to their contact and conversations. There were also some very interesting side characters that I was very intrigued by and thought they were well written and treated with nuance and respect.
However if (like me) you fell in love with Silas in A Fashionable Indulgence in part because he was so fiercely independent and took such joy in keeping himself a free man, then the resolution to this might leave you feeling a bit hollow. I want to clarify that I never thought the book was going to end in a traditional happy ending and clearly Silas in particular was going to have to compromise given the political realities of the time.
But to me Silas was a true revolutionary. Not in a we-shall-burn-everything-down way but in a this-system-is-FUCKED- and-I-need-to-help-people way! I fully understand that ppl get tired and he had been fighting all his life but I feel like that was his absolute core. I was quite prepped for him to retire and take a break or something and accept help from Dom to do it. Because people who love each other accept each other's help etc. What I did hope for was for him to retain that core of independence and pride that seemed to be important to him as a person.
This does not happen. The resolution, in my opinion, leaves us with a Silas who has compromised a really deep core part of himself. He does this for many reasons (some even good ones perhaps) but to see a proud person reduced to something he genuinely hates was quite shattering. I wish I had known to prepare myself for it, which is why I'm writing this now. I know not everyone comes into the books from this perspective but for the few who do I hope this is helpful.

In a word: EXTRAORDINARY.
By lm
Other reviews have covered the brilliant writing - sharp and engaging style, spot-on imagery and language, excellent flow - and discussed the relevant plot points, so in lieu of more summary, here is a general list of reasons why I've completely LOVED this book. Please proceed with caution if you haven't read it, as there will be some vague spoilers ahead:
1) I have read - and, don't get me wrong, enjoyed - plenty of historical fiction in which the past serves as a sort of nostalgic fantasy backdrop. In this book, however, history feels immediate and alive, easy to imagine because similar moral dilemmas exist today - and not just in vague universals, but in the very definition of social responsibility and the two-party system conflicts that keep echoing into the present. The book covers a wide enough slice of the social strata in its two protagonists to illustrate the profound differences in their social positions and associated mindsets via daily struggles, observations, and decision-making; the devil's in the details, and the details presented here are SUPERB. And the history they each embody, while entwined in their love story, is told through sharp contrast of their respective positions and outlooks, which are brilliantly presented: it's lived experience, unsentimental, realistic, and easy to relate to (the politics at the core not being very different from today's, after all). The writing is beautifully done and never feels like a lecture - rather, characters take note and have streams of thought that fit their perspective, and their voices feel personal and truthful, whether we agree with them or not. Example: at one point in the book, Silas mentally lists the moments in which he had noticed Dominic's privilege, drawing readers' attention to the casual unfairness too often taken for granted simply due to Dom's place in the social hierarchy. Through Silas, we get to question the origins of that privilege and the systems that maintain it, even as we observe certain limitations imposed on Dom by his position.
2) ...which brings us to the next point: just like Dominic's privilege and wealth are not presented uncritically, Silas's seditious work is not a fairytale either: this isn't revolution painted is broad strokes of noble poverty and high spirits kept pure by the ideal of a better world. It's dangerous, difficult, and exhausting physically and emotionally. And the movement (just like the social club Dominic belongs to) is made up of people, and thus rife with individual imperfections and flaws. In one scene Silas dryly observes: "It was hard to keep up the fight for the freedom of your fellow man when your fellow man was a bastard." This story takes a complex, adult, clear-eyed look at the realities of a lifetime of social struggle, which has genuinely moved me more than words can say and turned Silas into one of my all-time favorite literary characters. And - hopefully this is not too big of a spoiler - it also takes a good hard look at the challenge of *surviving* a lifetime of social struggle, and finding compromises that can allow for future continuation of such work without costing the revolutionary his life, liberty, or independence. It's the kind of believable victory that revolutionaries rarely get in books; oh, how I wish there were more such stories! (Btw, the scene between Silas and Richard near the end is *amazing* - and I'll just leave it at that. Read it and see for yourself.)
3) I'd recently described K.J. Charles as "a witch of a wordsmith" and, well, I stand by that 100%. The dramatic tension in this book is consistently high and perfectly pitched throughout; even during "downtime" in between immediate threats, the characters are aware it's only the calm before inevitable storm. I can't remember the last time I was so deeply engaged with a story - although that's putting it rather mildly; this experience felt like reading inside a powder keg by candlelight, and I could NOT put it down until 2am. This is your OFFICIAL WARNING: don't start this book unless you've got enough time to finish it the same day! Most of the tension comes from the masterfully woven plot, but there is also the inherent charge of romance that feels impossible yet somehow happens anyway - and the author is an expert in turning impossibility into a happy ending, getting her characters to learn and grow and change enough to be able to get together, but not to compromise their integrity in the process. Silas and Dom start out as good men on opposing sides; and they end up still as good men, still on opposing sides, but in love with each other, and both willing to change their lives for the sake of their relationship / in order to live more honestly with all they've learned.
4) Even if you're not into BDSM, the book does a good job of communicating why it works for the characters. Further, I truly appreciate that this love story subverts the genre trope of a dominant teaching the submissive; Silas and Dom begin their relationship a little lost and with limited experience, and get to learn from and with each other how to make the kink work for both. Also, their first kiss is one of the hottest things I've read in my life. But fundamentally, this is a story about two characters learning to love - to recognize how much they care, realize that their feelings are worth fighting for, and most importantly, learn to accept the love and care offered to them in the relationship.
5) The secondary characters are vividly portrayed, complex, and intriguing: I sincerely hope we'll get to see more of Zoe, Shakespeare, and Quex in the next installment in the series. I found Zoe especially fascinating. :)
6) Finally, the books: oh, I knew I'd fall head over heels for this story the moment Silas and Dom began talking literature! And then there was Blake, and book!porn (okay, perhaps not for them but it certainly felt that way to me), and - well, I love book lovers, real or fictional. And I LOVE book lovers who are capable of disagreement, yet their passion for the topic and their respect and care for each other enables them to have terrific debates about books (and oh, so much more). That ability for conversation, for connection across the divide, for passion AND mutual respect, is the pearl of hope at the core of the historical and political chasms in the story; and it certainly feels like the kind of hope we could use today.
In short: do yourself a favor and read "The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh" and "A Fashionable Indulgence" (because they are GREAT in their own ways), then read "A Seditious Affair" because it is a fantastic novel, a brilliant take on history, and a gorgeous, passionate love story that might just make you look at the world a bit differently. As for me, I'll be re-reading it first chance I get, and probably many more times in the future.

A Seditious Affair A Society of Gentlemen Novel by K.J. Charles
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance,
Oh I adored the Magpie books, and then KC Charles starts another series...I loved the first book ( have just discovered there’s a 0.5 novella on amazon about Ash and bought it). Silas played a big part in the first book, and here the time line kind of overlaps with the end of that one so we see events we know about happening from Silas and Dom’s POV.
Dom, seemed one of those darkish, silent and devoted to his job types in book one. I had wondered about Wednesdays and Silas, and then later we saw more that confirmed what I’d thought. Now we see the full story. Dom’s a Sub when it comes to sex, but needs a proper domination and in the past for him that’s been violence. That was the thing that was the breaking point for him and Lord Richard, and Lord Richard was and still is a real jerk about it. Then Silas comes along each Wednesday and he doesn’t like whips and floggers. He gives Dom what he needs though just by his force of character- he’s an amazing person.
On the face of it they’re so opposite, Dom the High Tory, working in a senior position for the Home Office and Silas the seditionist, writer and publisher of illegal pamphlets preaching against the King and the Gov. They only know each other through Wednesdays though, don’t know names, don’t exchange personal details. As time goes on though they get closer and closer, and we can see there’s a disaster in the making. Each feel very strongly about their politics and I love that kind of dichotomy in a story, where the two are so opposed I think “ how on earth is the author going to get them a HEA?” All this is set against a solid and interesting story of English politics in Regency times, and its part fiction part fact. I love a good romance, but I need it to be backed up by an interesting and realistic story and once again KC delivers it. We meet characters from book one, the irrepressible Harry and Foppish Julius, Lord Richard and Cyprian – that’s going to make an interesting story ;-)
I was gripped by this tale, couldn’t put it down, just had to see how KC was going to make a story that’s not looking to have a good ending work out, how she would bring together characters that seem doomed to be apart through their opposing views, even though they’ve fallen in love. I just couldn’t see how it could be done, and the closer I got to the end the more I just couldn't work out a way forward. ( that’s why I’m a reader not a writer!) Silas was Socialist through and through, would never step down from his beliefs, been convicted, imprisoned, whipped for it in the past yet wouldn’t be deterred, and nor would Dom ask him to. Dom, a Tory, Royalist and working for the department seeking Silas head – preferably on a pike! They had opposing views and yet respected each others right to them. A HEA I thought – No chance....and as usual thankfully I was wrong.
I so look forward to seeing what she can do with Lord Richard, he seems such an arrogant and selfish ar se in many ways, but recent events have forced him to look at himself and it looks like Cyprian is tired of waiting in the wings..
Stars: Five, a gripping and realistic story and a fabulous read.
